FD ? ATS 4.9 VS JDM 4.785
Well this is the last piece I need to put my cars new heart in and well I cant seem to find anyplace that has the JDM 4.785 in stock they are all out and I need one asap (hint hint if anybody has one in stock or knows how does IM please
) Well I was wondering if the ratios are realy that muck different between the ATS 4.9 vs the JDM 4.78? I will be installing a GSR 5th in as well to get the RPM's down in 5th on the freeway. I do 90% of my driving on there and dont want ot be in Vtec all day. So are there any extra maintence that you have to preform on the ATS vs the JDM or are they both like oem just change tranny fluid and what not. SO post up what you like or dislike about the 2 and if one is better than other. What are the mph shiftpoints (EX) us ITR 4.4o FD end of 1st is 40 give a few and second ends at 62mph
Just need some imput ASAP because need one buy first week in JULY
Thanks
CHRIS

Get the ATS you won't be dissapointed. FWIW I don't have the gsr 5th and cruising on the freeway is fine. At 5000 rpms I cruise at 80 mph. I just drove 5000 kms in a row with ATS+stock 5th. I think the GSR 5th only drops 300-500 rpms, not worth the money IMO.

Where did this "Extra Maintenance with the ATS FD" rumor start? I've never heard such things. I just run Honda Manual Tranny fluid and I guess I'll just change it every 15-30K or whenever I feel like it.
Why is that? I have the GS-R .787 5th and it's great IMO.
As I stated in another ATS thread, a better gear combo I thought of would be this:
USDM ITR 1-3 gears
USDM GS-R 4th and 5th gears
ATS 4.929FD
Why the GS-R 4th and 5th?
Because the JDM 4.78-equipped ITR tranny has the same gearing. This way you keep the lower cruising RPMs yet you have no slightly longer gap from the 4th-5th gear change if you track the car on a road course. I would think that the 3-4 gear change would not have a much larger gap since Honda of Japan felt that this was the gearset to go with in their "flagship" FF car, the '98 Spec ITR.
I have the ATS 4.929 in my USDM ITR tranny with the .787 GS-R 5th gear and I like it just fine. The RPM drop from 4th-5th gear is slightly bigger than the shitfs into other gears, but it's nothing that is alarming.
The only downside I can *think* of would be the following:
You're racing all-out on the freeway (
!!!) with some pals and when shifting from 4th-5th there's a *slight* lag until the RPMs climb a bit more.
You're on a full road course and the slightly longer gap prevents you from redlining in 5th gear because of the slightly larger gap from 4th-5th.
Considering those 2 maybe the ITR .848 5th gear is your choice if you do a lot of the 2 above, but for me I do enough freeway driving and possibly road trips to warrant the lower 5th gear cruising that the .787 GS-R 5th offers.
Just my 2 cents.
Don't go with the GSR 5th...you'll be sorry.

Well I went back and did a search on my original impressions of my ATS and here it is:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=90310
Please disregard any of the "RPMs drop less when upshifting" crap I was saying. While it gave me the illusion that the RPMs were landing higher in each gear than with the 4.400, it's mathematically impossible to do so.
I suppose that wheelspin or the fact that I was touching the other side of 8600rpm or so more frequently had me confused on the whole "RPMs land higher in the next gear" stuff.
I thought it was a good thread and it explains the whole misconception (that I had too
) about how people think that the ATS and JDM 4.78 final drive keep the RPMs higher between shift - they do NOT.
Enjoy that thread.

Has anybody taken their R with the final drive down the the tack and done the 1/4?
Were there noticable differences?

.2-.5 faster than stock... depending on wheel/ tire/ suspension combo and conditions.....
