I need help with my Vtech!!!
I own a 93 del sol which was given to me by my brother. It has a J-spec B16A1 engine swap in it (which neither he, nor myself did) and the vtech doesn't work on it. I've owned hondas all my life, but never owned one with vtech, and I know nothing about it except how it is supposed to work. I know it has the vtech solenoid, so that's not missing. The car was completely re-wired by the person who did the swap for my brother, and I'm not sure how good he really was at what he did. The car runs fine now that I've gone thru what I know (it was completely stripped when I got it, minus the motor and trans). What I'm dreading is the very real possibility that I may have to re-wire the entire computer system again myself. I can do just about anything mechanically, but I am in no way shape or form an electrician. Is there a possible problem it may have short of re-wiring it? Any help anyone could give me is very much appreciated. Steve
welcome to honda tech.
theres six letters in red towards the top right of the screen, SEARCH.
if you click on it you can search for help in previous topics.
try typing "vtec not working" you can leave the vtech off, unless its a cordless phone in your car which isn't working.

you will find tons of posts telling you how to resolve your problem by searching.

if you have problems ith your vtech, then go to target and return it and get a new one
but for real, do you have and codes, is the check engine light on, do you even have the correct ecu p28, p72 or p30

On some Honda cars Vtec is not allowed to engage if u have low oil levels, also check the Vtec solonoid sometimes a clogged screen will not let oil flow through and thus no Vtec (if its clogged though u have bigger problems) or if u have an msd ignition box some msd ignition boxes arent sealed very well and if moister gets in no Vtec. My 96 prelude had that problem so I took it off and boom Vtec worked again besides Honda has very good ignition systems and you shouldn't beef it up until u have a good amount of work done to the car
are there any check engine lights?
3 things the ECU needs to make vtec happen:
1.) Engine temp signal
2.) RPM signal
3.) Oil pressure signal
I'd check all of those first, and clear any check engine lights.
Oh and if it has a stock intake tube on it, you might want to take that off because it has baffles that make it hard to hear vtec if at all.
if you have an aftermarket intake tube you will know when vtec kicks in

WOW! Apparently I can only get help with my spelling. Way to treat a fellow car guy who was interested in joining your forums

The oil level is fine, there is a check engine light on but the only code that shows is for the knock sensor. I can see the wires coming out of the solenoid, however I have no idea if they are actually connected to anything at the ecu or not. I tried connecting the wires to the knock sensor that a friend of mine (who claims he's pretty good with honda motors) told me to connect. When my brother owned the car the vtec didn't work, but he claimed he hooked up a switch to it so he could turn it on and off. The only problem with this is that I think my brother is a pathological liar and that it hasn't worked since the engine was put in.

Well, it seems like you have a rat's nest. What kind of ECU is in this car? Your brother shouldnt have bandaged the problem with a switch. The ECU has different fuel tables for vtec and non vtec operation.
Anyway, I tried to PM you but since you can't recieve messages yet,
Did you switch up the plugs? The VTEC solenoid and CTS plugs are the same, and they are in the same area. Do you have a wiring diagram to get wire colors from? Are there any check engine lights? What ECU are you running?
To work, VTEC fundementally needs:
-CTS reading warm coolant temp.
-VTEC solenoid wiring, and hardware/software working and present.
-activation RPM (B16A ECU has a 6k VTEC cross.)
-Speed sensor above 15mph
-Throttle position
-oil press.
bad MAP voltages can cause lots of problems including VTEC inop.
All in all, give out more details about your problem. Or try the search feature. Other people might have had the same problem you are trying to get across but may not be able to explain
That's a general overview of how VTEC operates. It's hard to E-fix a car, but with that fundemental knowledge, hopefully you can hunt down the problem yourself.
FIGURE IT OUT FIRST, AND THEN BUY PARTS IF NESSACARY. DO NOT THROW PARTS AT IT BLINDLY ANTICIPATING A SOLUTION. DO NOT USE GHETTO FIXES.
If you don't know how to figure it out, take it somewhere. It's easier and cheaper that way.
I'm not yelling at you or telling you that you did something wrong. I just see way too many people out here doing things like buying a MSD ignition, distributor, fuel pump, wires, plugs, and JDM air freshener because their car wont start. They refuse to take it somewhere and then find out it's a fuse or something when they finally do take it somewhere.
Go get an engine side wiring harness from a 92-95 EX/Si or 92-95 Del sol Si. You will have to mod your ECU harness. Did your brother actually run the wires all the way into the ECU for VTEC and knock? The non VTEC del sols do not come with wiring for VTEC. No 92-95 del sol comes with wiring for knock. Sounds like someone had a bad time with your old harness. Wire it up correctly or take it somewhere that can wire it up correctly. Wiring gremlins are the majority of swap troubles.
If you dont know how to do it, learn how to do it before you pick up a tool. Or just take it somewhere. lol it makes it a whole lot easier.

Thanks guys, this should help quite a bit. I don't know which computer it has, I need to get to the car, but I believe it is the P30. I will certainly check the connector since it seems to me there was a connector very simmilar to the coolant temp connector that was unplugged. The computer has been completely rewired, but as I said before, I don't think my brother actually connected a switch to it, because the only switch in the car that isn't factory is for a set of after market fog lights. All in all, I believe with the info you've given me I should be able to figure it out, if not... I'll just take it to someone who knows what they're doing.
is your motor JDM?? if so take pic of vtec solenoid so i can see. i had a vtec problem in my JDM b16 swap. my JDM solenoid had no pressure actuator on solenoid nor did it have threads for a USDM actuator..

The problem with that is that it won't pop up on search and/or you'll just get flamed for it.
I actually wish that "VTECH" and "V-TECH" would automatically change to "VTEC" (kind of like the f-word turns into "expletive"). Then threads like this wouldn't have blown up full of stupid flaming.
