Default Redline Time Attack @ VIR - aka: weekend that everything goes wrong

I don't even know where to start, so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

First off, got a new cage installed last weekend, some have request specs on it, so I'm going to do a separate post later once the car is clean:

Car felt completely different, but drove the hell out of it anyway:

Yes, my bumper is falling off and my wheels are rubbing.......

During the first practice Friday, something when boom in the tranny, lost 4th gear through 10:

(yes, 4th gear, go figure)

Got hold of Keven from hondaworks and he just so happened to have a spare ITR tranny!
So I got some new hotness Saturday morning:

Keven rules.

Not only that, but Keven and Cory helped with the install!! With air tools we (they mostly) got the transmission swapped in less then an hour on Saturday morning!

Cory rules too.

Old bust chit:

At least I have a spare.

ot: I called my American Express customer service to see if I had enough credit left and the conversation went something like this:

me: "Yeah, I need to see how much credit I have left so I can buy a tranny."
amex: (very long pause) "ummm......ok..... "
me: "A transmission for a car"
amex: "Oh, right, let me check on that for you."

Anyway, got everything back together in time to make Saturdays practice session. About halfway through I started losing boost and there was a whistling noise coming out from under the hood. I figured I'd ;ost a vacuum somewhere and wasn't too concerned. Unfortunately, I found out that the bolts holding the two c-clamps that hold the turbo exhaust housing onto the turbo had backed out. This caused the exhaust props to interfere with the housing. The blades lost:

So, in true Don fashion, I figured what else could go wrong. So I put everything back together Saturday night (a 6 hour process) and ran Sunday anyway. I was a little timid, but still made the cut and came in 1st for the modified FWD class! I know this isn't really a big deal, but it's my first physical trophy and after all I went though, it a big deal to me.

Although I must say, the trophy girls this year sucked:

Pimping the Full-Race hat and P1 shirt again.

Other notes from the weekend:
HPC failed!
I don't know if anyone has seen my ceramic header thread, but it will be updated again. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2094456
New HPC 1600 coating, ~500 h/w miles and ~20 track miles:

After event:

Also, still having lower ball joint rubbing issues:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1788276

And as to the cage, if your asking if the EG can still carry 4 wheels, 2 5-gallon gas cans, jack, luggage, jack-stands, oil pan, 2 foldy seats, cooler, tarp, race-wear, with enough room to close the hatch and still see out the back window, the answer is 'yes':

Congrats, way to pull everything together in the end.
I just read about your suspension problems, very very weird.

Nice post. I was checking out your car in the paddock this evening, walking past it I noticed the K1's and said to my GF "those K1's look at lot like 17"s - he'd better have a good excuse for those" Then I saw the Stoptechs on the front.

Congrads on your first trophy!

good job, don! you stuck with it, and came out on top!!!! x100

sorry i didn't make it down there for this event; i was planning to a couple months ago, but 'life' got in the way (daughter had an important crosscountry race sat morning, and i had to work sat night and sunday afternoon!).

i'd have really liked to have had my ex H1 EG there to try to give you a run for your money; it's running better now (every time out, we get the tuneup a little closer, and it runs a bit better!!!!).

good luck repairing everything, and good job!!!!!!!

Congrats. It was fun watching you win.

I just so happened to snag a pic while you were swapping your tranny:

Those are my two biggest pains right now. I've done at least 6 track weekends on this setup and the biggest problems I have are due to bolts loosening up and backing out on me. I had almost everything safety wired and nord-locked. Just not everything.....
Excess heat is an issue too. Rubber hoses too close to the manifold will dry out and crack. Plastic melts. Hood paint is cracked and brown. Dipstick is way pissed off.

Thanks for the pic ALF!!!

But it looks like I'll be down a few weeks anyway once I get some info on the turbo rebuild and manifold re-recoat of the recoating.

My GT2871RS had most of the bolts that hold the exhaust side to the center section come loose. Others broke the heads off. I'm surprised I didn't melt/burn the oil lines. It did, however, melt and **** off a bunch of other stuff.

Oh yeah, I blew up a 4th gear once too. All the teeth let go, all at once.

It's such a familiar story, it's sad. Loose bolts, melting and burning plastic, "everything is a wear item"... etc...

Come on, seriously?

Congrats on the win. What's next?

wow,i had no idea you also had the turbo problems too!
still thoroughly whooped my ***,hurt turbo and all ...i had my shift lever break off in my hand saturday during practice.the **** and threaded portion of the lever broke.i bought a clamp-on APC **** from Advance, but it came off while shifting into 1st coming off grid for the timed session,so i was shifting by grabbing the boot and what was left of the lever inside it .had to swap out the shifter(had a friend bring one from the shop),laying on my back in the sand that evening.i thought i had it bad,but then i thought about swapping a whole tranny...
BTW-when was the awards presentation?nobody i talked to knew anything,so i just went home.those guys need to get their act together.

Congrats on the win. What's next?</TD></TR></TABLE>Nothing planned for sure. The only goals I have are to hit Road Atlanta and Mid-Ohio next year. Will probably also try to make it to the Watkins Glen Carguys event. Thus this all will require a trailer and something to tow it with.

I've also already talked to the NASA folks and will be entering some Time Trails next year with them. Nothing further West planned. Just cannot afford to take the time off work.

First off is a tear down of the manifold and turbo and getting everything shipped back to Full-Race.

I found one of them in the timing booth and asked him what my time was at around 12:45. He said they where doing the awards at 1.
They made a half-*** announcement over the speakers at about the same time, but you couldn't really hear it. You need to get hold of them because the top three of all the groups got a plaque.
I disagree how they did the overall winner trophy's. The guy who won the Unlimited-AWD ending up getting three trophy's.
One for winning the U-AWD category
One for winning the overall fastest in the Unlimited group.
One for winning the overall fastest in the whole event.
???
Plus, almost 90% of the contingency awards applied only to the top three overall winners. I just think that is unfair in the fact that the top teams are already sponsored and don't need any of the stuff being awarded. It's guys like us that are busting our ***'s at work just to buy a set of extended lug nuts that actually need that stuff. Oh well, life is fair, right?

i was still there at 1.....oh well.i can't believe you didn't get a trophy for 1st place!i can see a trophy for fastest overall, but that same car would obviously also be fastest in U-AWD too,so why give another trophy for that?!at least give a trophy for 1st in each respective class.contingency should definitely pay to the top finisher(s) in each class too.i guess they only want to bother putting their name out there for the crazy unlimited cars that will get into the magazines...
either way, still had lots of fun.

Wow. This sounds almost exactly like my weekend with one exception. When I finally got everything back together on Sunday just in time to race, I thought I'd just stuff my car into a tire wall instead of winning anything. So I guess not *everything* went wrong for you. Way to triumph.

Congrats! However, I'd feel MUCH better if you guys had jackstands under the car. Yeah I know how it goes, in a hurry, have to carry the stands in the car, but still. There's another thread on here about how many people die by having their car drop on them!
