Is there anywhere I can rent a tool to take my crankshaft pulley off. I'm havin a heck of a time getting it off.....I've pretty much ran outta stuff to try. Thanks.

Is the engine out of the car? If it is, I just wedged a cloth covered screwdriver in the teeth of the flywheel and then into one of the many spaces in the block. I held that while my dad went to town on the bolt with a breaker bar. 15 minutes worth of cussing and it came right off. Might even help to slip a slightly larger diameter tube over the breaker bar for increased mechanical advantage.

A big impact wrench will overpower the bolt to take it off. See if you can borrow or rent an electric one.

 

summit sells the crank tool for 65 with a long handel!! just go in half with your buddy.

 

If the car is driveable, pack it up and take it to a local shop. They can use their 1/2" impact with house air to break it. Then have them torque it down just enough to get you home.

Option 2 would be to buy/rent a chain wrench. It will hold the pulley, but may also induce damage to it.

Option 3 would be to buy my tool from me. If that hex opening measures 2in. from side to side, my tool would fit.

 

Get the tool somehow, either borrow one from a friend if they happen to hve one, or buy one from summit or etoolcart.com IN any case DONT use an impact wrench!

I used a chain wrench with a belt wrapped around the pulley.

 

how bout this, leave the wrench and the socket on the pulley nut. leave it so that the wrench is unable to rotate, that means having the wrench touching the ground. next depending how the crank rotates, you can now turn the car, of course that means turning your car keys in the ignition for a sec or until the bolt comes loose. This will allow the bolt to come loose for the crank. If anyone can confirm the rotation of the crank.

 

You are thinking what I was thinking. I kept saying this and everyone was like....Whoa, your crazy. What if it starts? and i was like...well i'll just cut fuel and it wont. And my stepdad didnt like that idea....at least I know someone is thinkin like me.. But one thing I havent checked is which way the bolt turns while the motor is crankin.....

i did this to my nissan maxima, it worked fine, just gave it a quick crank a couple of times, the bolt came loose. Learned that from one of the Master techs.

 

the bolt turns counterclockwise with the car running. You can do it this way!

I recommend another way that I found very easy to do this past weekend. I have the special tool and it is worth getting buy I was trying to take an Unorthodox Pulley off (its for sale by the way) and it has no place to put that "special tool".

Anyway, after lots of cursing, I found someones suggestion about fashioning a brace for the flywheel. Just take off the 2 brackets and the cover plate that covers the inspection window for the flywheel (its near the oilpan junction with the tranny). Then, take some of that metal bracket material from a hardware store with the holes in it and drill one out to accomodate one of the screws that holds that cover plate on. Put one hole of the bracket into one of those screw holes and the other into one of the screw holes in the flywheel (you don't need a screw, I just jammed an appropriate size hex wrench in there to hold it). Now you can crank all you want on your crank pulley bolt and it will come right off!

good luck, this method is foolproof. Works great to get the bolt back on to the right torque again too.
