Differences between cable type, and hydraulic tranny LSD's?

I have 2 lsd's sitting in my shop right now and apparently one is for a cable tranny, and the other is for a hydro tranny (both jdm). Physically, they appear to be the same. Same # of bolts on the ring gear, same dimensions, etc.
I need to know a few things.
#1 Will either lsd work in my GSR tranny?
#2 Is there any way to tell the difference between the 2 units?

I answered this question myself, I guess.
Nope.
But it was a fun project. Oh well, I'll put everything back together and try to pick up another lsd.

Actually the difference is in the bearings and shaft that the bearings press on to.
The gsr diff bearings are tapered, and the lsd I have has squared off bearings.
I'm pretty sure the lsd's I have are from the b16 tranny and that's why they don't work.

I'm surprised that only one person in all of Honda-tech has any opinion or experience in swapping an oem lsd into a gsr tranny, or any hints as to what a person can look for.
it can be done. you will need to shave down the area around the case where the differential will go since the lsd diff is slightlly lager. you will also need gsr shims/bearings.

Quaifes have the same part number for their unit for the LS tranny from 1990-2000. That would include small shaft cables, big shaft cables and big shaft hydraulics. The Quaife GSR tranny uses a different part # because of a different size ring gear. I assume that would hold true for your situation also.

yes, they are interchangeable ... done them many times. Transfer the c-clip shim from upper casing to lower casing. Pull out tapered bearings and install the square. Use same ring gear, dont separate.

Thanks all for the info.
I wasn't sure if this could be done, only because I wasn't able to get a good grip with my micrometer on the shaft to measure the diameter. I know it was close though.
Cheetah, I'm not sure what you mean by transferring the c-clip shim to the lower casing. Is this the same "C" clip that I had to release to be able to seperate the housing? Anymore info is appreciated as custom can be a bitch sometimes
Thanks!

where the differential carrier bearings fit into the casing there is a spacer which makes up for the offset between casing fitment and carrier bearing, i.e. you check this during the pre-load process with a feeler guage to get the size of the shim needed to fit the offset.

wonderful.
Thanks for the info Cheetah.
If I can't find a nice lsd tranny, I'll start working on mine.
