and so I ride...
Originally I was supposed to take a cross country trip around the US; however, my dog was diagnosed with cancer and fought a lot longer than anyone had expected (10 weeks instead of the estimated 4). After we put Sammy to rest I realized that I didn't have time to complete the trip so I completely put it out of my head. Then today as I late lunch I thought to myself, "Yeah fuggit, I'll do as much as I can before school starts on the 22nd." A few hours later I had a new set of Pilot Roads and a GPS 276C slapped on the SV.
So...no idea where I'm headed...no idea how I'm getting there. I left my house around 8:00pm and got as far as Timberville, VA before a bat smacked my visor and I decided to call it a night (no more night riding from here on out). Now here I sit in a hotel room watching Anaconda on TBS and staring at my GPS map, wondering where I'll end up tomorrow. Ohio? Kentucky? Indiana??? Illinois?!?? All I know is I'm lookin' forward to hitting that 1,000 mile mark in a day's worth of riding and wouldn't mind getting as far as North Dakota before I have to turn around and head back home.
Stay tuned for updates, pics, and video. I'll try and report back as much as I can but I'm trying to camp as much as possible so my internet access will be limited. Feel free to post up or pm me any recommendations - roads to ride, sights to see, etc.
Who says us NoVA guys don't ride?

I'm so tempted to do the same. I have never taken a vacation in my life and I think I should just ride across the country. I have looked at sites where people have done the same and always wished to do the same but have not.

Vacations are essential...
Sounds awesome. I don't have the money for such a trip, but I think I might do one one day. Can't believe you're trying for 1000 in a day with a laptop on your back, though.

Ride safely and enjoy the road. I'll do one of these trips some day (Dallas to LA on a VFR is my current dream).
Keep hydrated and don't over exert yourself trying to make a destination. You're on vacation and sometimes, its the unexpected layover that is the most memorable.

That gps is probably programmed to go starbucks to starbucks
Sweet man. Consider going down toward Blacksburg or to WVA - 33? Should be good roads each way though 33 is supposed to be sweet

Hello from Canton, OH!
I camped last night at Salt Fork Lake and was left without internet access. I wanted to give some updates before I got going so I'm hiding behind a Quality Inn and I'm stealing a wireless connection. Fugg 'em!
Picking up from where I left off. Not much action at the hotel. I washed some shorts and socks, watched some TV and passed out. My skivvies drying in the bathroom.
I woke up at 6am, showered, and loaded up!

In the blue bag I have my tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. Black duffel bag has my "toiletries," clothes, and laptop. Camera tripod strapped down. Tank bag has misc. items.
I'm off!

I was either 220 or 250 I was riding along when I came upon this massive wall of rock. I put my bike in front so you can get an idea of just how incredibly massive this wall was.

"Wow."
I don't know why, but the wall kind of creeped me out. Weirdest feeling, but it was awesome nonetheless. On I rode...

I figured I'd just ride through West Virginia and wait until the last minute to decide where I'll be going. Let me tell you, some parts of West Virginia are really...well...West Virginia. I stopped in some wilderness and heard some weird noses that got me back on my bike, I rolled through a "downtown" area which looked more like Historic Old Town Leesburg, I cruised through what looked to be old, abandoned homes only to see kids pop out of the backyards, and I rode so many damn twisties that I was begging for a stretch of straight road!
Whew!
The only crappy part was not riding as far as I wanted to. Because of the roads I decided on in WV, I ended up hitting a lot of traffic. Small towns, stuck behind trucks on one lane roads, etc. I rode all day and only managed a little over 300 miles. I really should've knocked out 600 miles for all the time I spent on my bike. Oh well.
I eventually made it into Ohio and found a campsite nearby. My resting spot for the night.

Figured the world might want to watch me "pitch a tent"
Yay.
In the pictures above you'll see I'm wearing a nice pair of cargo shorts. They're my riding pants!
The bottoms unzip for the ultimate in riding gear versatility.
The pants come complete with hip and knee armor. The knee armor is stored in the bottom part of the pant that you can unzip. One thing that's nice about the armor is it's contained in velcro pockets. So if you wanted to, you could switch it out for some GP armor. Olympia Recon Transformer pants. Moving on...
I got dark surprisingly fast and after a quick shower I was left to eat my dinner in the dark.

Boil it up!
My *** is falling asleep so I'll just say that this Jetboil thing is nice. Reeeeal nice.
I slept like a baby and again woke up at 6am. Before the day started I needed to figure out what I was going to do. I felt like Bear Grylls trying to figure out where I was as I ate out of a can.
"I need to get my bearings!"
So, that's where I'll leave it for now. I have some video and I just realized that I have Windows Movie Maker on this laptop so I'll get to that hopefully tonight, maybe tomorrow.
