Default J's Racing Duct Opinions

I've seen this duct on only a few Civics and really like the way it looks and the possible functionality of it. I know that alot of people would say its a waste of money or that it doesnt really increase the air to the filter that much. These are probably valid arguements but then again I def. like the fact that it looks good and is not something that you see everyday on a Civic. The only thing that I'm concerned w/ is how exactly I would secure it w/out having to create marks that would be permanent on the bumper if i were to remove it. Does anyone know how much in the way of modifications I would have to make to get this thing to fit? Would I have to cut out much more than just the little plastic unpained piece in the bumper? I've gone ahead and purchased this from memory fab. I plan on making a tube to go from the bumper duct to the hole where the resonator used to be to pipe the air directly to the sri. I'm going to use the same process as the guy in the link I posted. Let me know what you think...

Heres a link to a place where I found a guy w/ one on his eg.

As for leaving permenant marks on your bumper, just buy foglights if you decide to take it out. I would only invest in one if you live in an area that doesnt get a whole lot of rain, or at least dont drive your car in it. Personaly i dont have anything against the bumper intakes. To prove/disprove any advantages/disadvantages, i would have see a dyno chart, for someone to state that they make no difference. I would just speculate that it would allow a bit more fresher air to enter into the motor than the conventional cold air intake, which is located in the bumper/wheel-well area.

^^^ Good point, If I had the resources I would like to see if there are any differences in overall performance esp. at different outside temperatures. Like I said, I plan on making a fiberglass pipe that will take the air directly from the duct up through the hole for the resonator and then into a enclosed carbon fiber heatshield that I plan on making sometime in the near future. The heatshield would act similar to say a comptech icebox.

I wanted to purchase one of these for my car if I wasn't planning on going turbo. Its definitely not one of those things you do for looks since most people only run one on the right side. You can always run some heating duct from the air duct to the intake. I dont know the site, but they do sell the stuff that most race cars use for their air ducts. Saw the website listed in a sport compact or turbo magazine. Some people even have the duct aimed at their breaks for cooling from what I have seen. Sorry im not much help

did i read that you bought one of our(memoryfab) intake ducts? i have the only other one in the U.S... if you need help let me know! yes you have to do quite a bit of cutting to the bumper and the bumper support a bit to. PM me if you have any more questions.

Wait, what? You have one on an ek? I talked to memory fab and they said that it would require cutting but that it wouldn't be that much. Can you send me pics? As far as I can tell, I am going to have to cut out the unpainted plastic and maybe a little more. I would rather not cut my bumper support if I could. From what I can remember the bumper support is a little higher than the duct, correct me if I'm wrong though.

On a side note. I talked to j's racing and they tried to suggest that the eg duct would work, but that it would take alot of modifications. Now unless I would want to do alot of body work to get it to look right, why would I want to try to put a bumper duct that was never made for my bumper?

there was a guy in the marketplace selling these things, hemade em himself.

and i think he had both sides, but i can't remember....but i think they were a bit cheaper.

you know they're also used for brake cooling, on both sides, with the help of some dryer hose...

already seen them. He unfortunately doesnt make them for the ek chassis as far as I checked. Another guy that made the ones for the eg chassis for brake cooling doesn't really make them much any more. I already contacted him to see if he could make me one, but he seems to be busy and also doesn't have a mold to make one either.

To keep anyone still interested updated, I just got the duct today. Fast shipping considering. I thought it would be another few days to a week to get it. Looks pretty good except for one spot where it looks as if theres either a crack in the paint or a very minor crack in the fiberglass. I can't see any cracks on the backside of this spot so I assume everything is ok. Haven't gotten a chance to test fit it since I'm putting my suspension back on but, I'm going to try to test fit it by the end of the weekend. I'll post some pics asap.

Aight here are some pics.

^^^ Notice how big the pipe is. HUGE!!

I looked at it closely when I got it in the mail today and notice roughly 2 small spots where it looks like the paint was scratched. Upon further notice, I realized that in these two spots the fiberglass appears to be slightly thin and when shining a light on the back side of it, you can see where the resin is somewhat thin. I might contact memory fab about this. I dont think it should be a problem, but then again I dont want it to crack and then be sol. In general though, the piece looks very nice. I'm still unsure also how much of the flange of the duct that I'm going to cut off. The pic from memory fab shows alot of the flange cut off, but I'm not sure what exactly would work the best and also look the best. Suggestions on this would be helpful...

You might notice a tiny bit of a difference, I mean it is technically ram air...but then again so is a dryer hose zip tied underneath and directed towards the intake...

You'll notice A BIT more in the butt dyno...but a dyno run won't show any gains (and for those who are going to say "well the car isn't moving" think of the big *** fan they put in front of your car and why).

Like I said before, I plan on making an intake tube that will attach to this duct on one end and come up through the resonator hole into a carbon fiber heatshield intake box that will house the filter for a password intake. The heatshield should hopefully help to prevent heat soak issues that people have talked about w/ sri. I might try to do a few tests to see if there is any difference in intake temps around the filter etc... If I dont see a difference, then I might try a insulating coating on the inside of the heatshield.

my carbon intake duct is the same way with the light spots. i havent had an issue and ive had it on the car for about 2 years. i would suggest you paint the duct with some bumper trim paint or something similar to keep it looking fresh and the duct does increase airflow by about 5%.

What types of tests did you perform if any? Air flow tests I assume, w/ and w/out the duct? Temp differences?

the tests were on average. i dont have the exact scamatics of the duct im just going off of what i was told by memfab japan which i was informed of a 5% increase in air flow. i personally use a dryer hose linking mine to the filter im cheap.. on of these days ill get real brake duct hose

lol, thats where I come in. I dunno if I said this before, but I haven't been able to find anyone on honda-tech w/ this. Memory fab basically said theres only a few people w/ this out there and they dont stock it b/c of the lack of demand. I'll be fitting it sometime within the next week more than likely. Unfortunately, its hot as ***** outside and I still have to get my rear sway/asr and last strut and gc on. After that I'll be all go on fitting the duct. I'll try to take some pics for you guys when I fit it on there.

Ok guys so i got it all installed. It took a little bit of time, but I like the way it looks. All it needs now is an overall good sanding and some oem paint to exactly match the car. For now the regular black will be close enough. Heres 2 teaser pics for you. I'll post up some more pics sometime soon.
