Overheating issue?
I have a 2003 civic ex. I've brought it to my local mechanic for overheating. He believed it was a blown head gasket or a pinhole in my water jacket. He suggested i bring to the honda dealership for a warranty issue. The dealership had my car for two days and could not get the problem to occur. They re-burped the coolant system and told me to try it out. About four days later my car overheated again and i returned to the dealer. The dealer has now had my car for another two days and still cannot duplicate the problem. What my mechanic did note was that when the car was cold with the radiator cap open the coolant began to bubble out. He believes the water jacket is taking on a slight amount of compresson from the engine. So If any one has an idea to what it could be let me know because i'd like to avoid spending four hundred bucks to tear off the head.
Thanks,

i had this same problem it was my head gasket............get it replaced u might not believe it but trust me after head gasket is replaced then everything is fine im prtty sure u get an overheating randomly...here and there rite? some others in here had the same problem too... our motor sucks
go get a pressure test for leaks... if there are no leaks then its prob the thermostat....
after a 4 hour drive back from ImportAlliance, I got a mile from my house and my car started over heating... I had no leaks at all.... no fluid on the ground either so replaced thermostat and it fixed it.

well i just had the thermostat done, when the engine was warm (a little lower than half way on my gauge) i popped the hood. I observed a couple things, a few spots of fresh coolant around the cap for the overflow, and the coolant was bubbling inside of the overflow tank. I don't know if the overfilled it a small amount or if i am still having problems.....

I had two compression tests done on my engine man and it passed both. Not to say that there isn't a pinhole leak in the water jacket right? I also just had the thermosatat done a few hours ago and had about a thirty minute drive home. It didn't overheat but when i pulled into shaws in my hometown i popped the hood for giggles. The coolant was bubbling inside the overflow resevoir, it wasnt intense but it was noticable. Is that normal to see?
You need to do a leakdown test, not a compression test, and I guarantee you its the head gasket. If there's no leaks in the cooling system itself, theres only one other place that air can get in......
Another thing you can check for to see if it's the head gasket... oil in the coolant or... coolant in your oil... or if your burning antifreeze... if you have any of these then the headgasket is the likely problem

but remember before you go tearing apart your head all day long or taking to the shop and emptying your wallet (or for more parts) make sure you find out what the problem is

yeah i gave this information cuzz ive been through it and trust me i replaced here and there and everything you can think of that causes the car to over heat and at the end replacing the head gasket .....the car stopped overheating...
Only replace the thermostat if the upper hose is hot and the lower is still cold after the car is at normal operating temp. Do a compression/leak down before tearing the head off.
