some jdm b20b tidbits
well i called the guy from hondamotorsonline last week and he said that the '97 - '98 crv engines have the 9.6:1 pistons and they have the low rise ls manifolds. Unfortunately he doesn't ship to Canada so i couldn't take him up on his garantee.
I located a '97 b around here which has the low rise mani and i got them to do a cr test for me- 160/170/170/170 (at 44 000kms). Doesn't sound like the higher cr to me which should be around 190 i understand.
Interestingly the jap honda spec site claims that the '97 4X4 crv (which he said this engine is from, pulled it himself) has a 9.2:1 cr , like my integra does, and the cr is in the same 160-170 range too. Interesting.
These engines are getting hard to find in Canada here and the prices are going thru the roof. Can't decide if i should cash in on this one or keep waiting and looking.

daver,
no-one ive seen has explained/demonstrated/argued that the 0.8 compression points are worth the hassel...
nor do i think that anyone will.
go with what you can get, make sure its sound, and any mods will take you past what ever gain is had from a "high CR" B20Z.
just my thoughts on hte issue...
once my '96 JDM B20B lands in Oz, ill pull the head and see if it has the 9.6:1 pistons as the honda.co.jp site states it should...

Is the only difference between the USDM B20B and USDM B20Z the pistons? I thought I remember something about a knock sensor too...I could be mistaken though...

from that perspective, a higher compression block would be a better starting point for a 2.0VTEC

I've got a '97 JDM B20B with the LS-style manifold and it still has P3F pistons in it, so unless they build it with a lower deck, it has the same low compression as a USDM B20B. Only difference I noticed is that mine came from Japan with a TWO-layer head gasket.
a two layer gasket eh? I wonder if that could be responsible for a 0.4cr increase from 8.8:1 to 9.2:1 (i assume the standard here is 3 layer?). There's got to be an explanation for that honda spec site's wildly erratic specs.
Tinkerbell- how to do a compresion test? With the tester guage screwed into a spark plug hole? Then turning the engine over (big ratchet or breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt if its out, or ignition if its in) 5 or six times? My brother moved to Manly 3 months ago and all he does is surfs.
I read on another site a suggestion that perhaps the jdm b20bs have slightly more aggressive cams than here...??...doubt it tho.

JDM B20b = USDM B20z
TRANSLATOR = http://au.altavista.com/pos/babelfish/trns
this indicates that the CR is 8.8 and 9.2 for the JDM '97 CRV...
make sense?
seems B20B is not always 9.6 CR?
maybe the Japanese have botched their website...???

So does the USDM B20B have a weaker block than the USDM B20Z, since the z has higher compression? Is that what you're saying? I thought the only differences were the knock sensor and the compression....*shrugs*
mr devin - certainly neither has a weaker block than the other. If any the Usdm B would last longer than the Z in a perfect world because it doesn't have to work as hard having a lower cr and all.
b16aek - We see your posts, but do you have any backup for your claims. Some people on the forums like to say that the jdm b and the usdm Z are absolutely positively identical. Then someone else posts a picture of their 8.8 cr jdm b20b pistons. Now, its nice to give people the benefit of the doubt and believe them, but for all i know the world really is flat. I've never personally been to outer space to see forsure.

the only difference is the rated power from Honda
B20B = 126
B20Z = 146
or whatever!?!?
so we (daver and I) wanted some seriously good information and it has been a fun time gathering comments, suggestions and severe generalisations,
keep 'em coming!!!
i reckon, on the basis of everything ive heard, the B20B/Z is the same, except for the pistons (flat or dome) and a KS.
from the dyno sheets ive seen, once you start modifying the engine, teh difference in CR makes VERY little diference to the final output...

So the JDM B20B has a 140ish HP rating? I never considered buying one because I thought it was the 120ish HP one. Dude at hondamotorsonline might be getting a call soon...

you notice on the honda.co.jp (from above post) website that the B20B's with more torque have less peak power?
i think the rated power is not really important here.
it is the power potential that we are most interested in.
as i have said before - the only difference appears to be the CR from 8.8 to 9.6, being a result of the pistons.
both the B20B and the B20Z have similar power potential, with heaps of torque as well.
most poeple seem to be getting great dyno figures using either engine...

i've seen a couple online jdm b20b dyno's and i've heard tell of a couple more and we're talking almost 140 wheel hp and 135 wheel tork. That's 160hp to the fly. One of these guys claimed that his compression dialed in at about 190 psi per cylinder and thats the kind of numbers i'm looking for.
Everyone else who even claimed that they got the lower cr versions ( 160-170 psi's apparently) have been putting up impressive .25 mile times considering the "supposed" low hp of these things.
I've only seen a few mediocer reviews; apparently having a restrictive exhaust and an old cloggd cat can really slow these bad boys down and hopefully that was it.
I hate doing all this b20 advertising because they are scarce enough to find as it is around here. Save a good one for me!!

If you aren't going VTEC with the B20, nor boost, then power potential isn't quite as important as what power the stock block will make (to me at least)
So there is still no consensus whether the JDM b20b makes 146hp? And now 9.2 cr gets thrown into the mix. Im confused.

you want confusion mister? These specs i took from the jap honda site.
