Default '89 CRX DX 5 spd cluster, Blue 5 pin connector ID? search not helping

Man I've been searching for an hour now and I just can't come up with the info on this dang plug. I have seen over and over the 2 main connectors and even the 5 pin ID on the 90-91 wiring but that connector is running 5 wires and does not directly match up w/ the '89 that only has 3. I hope sombody can clear this up for me finally, I may be retarded but I don't care at this point, I need to find this out before I install my Ek Si speedo. It looks like they are not needed (the 3 wires) from all the post I have seen but I don't wanna let it go until I figure these out

The 3 wires coming out are as follows, left to right from the wire side of harness
C1-empty
C2-Yel
C3-empty
C4-Blk
C5-yel/blk

I compared it to my 91 Si dash harness and pinouts and the 5 pin connector wires read like this
C1-grn/yel (Ecu)
C2-yel (speed amplifier)
C3-yel/blk (auto seat b. control)
C4-red (Brightness)
C5-red/blk (power)

I hope sombody can chime in because I have yet to find this exact topic covered.

i have done this exact swap, i ran a 99 ex cluster (the one with the blue coloring on the face) in a 1990 dx.

theres quite a few features on that cluster that you wont be using.

most of them are negative triggers, for things such as:

the abs light
the low gas warning light

things like that.

as long as the diagrams you have give you the information needed for

tach signal
speedo
constant 12 volt
ignition 12 volt
ground
fuel
blinkers
check engine

you know, the major stuff then you'll be fine.

EDIT **** reading owns me, you're asking why the 89 is different then a 90.

yes thats a well documented discrepancy. have you looked at the thread for the EK Si Cluster swap?

theres two sets of images, one for 88-89, the other for 90-91

Yeah I have seen that thread too many times too count and it only shows the 2 main connectors which I don't need. I am just **** about m y own car and want to know or see a diagram showing what these 3 wires go to. on all 88 diagrams it does not show them making me think the 89 is it's own little retard? the '89 seems to be the damn red headed step child of the 88-91 CRXs

There are some inaccuracies with the 88-89 pins outs, the 2 CRX clusters I had from the 88-89 vintage were nothing like the poster information, so I had to tract down/test the proper wiring. I think B18c5CRX was using 88-89 hatchback harnesses, which may have been different altogether than the 88-89 CRX pins outs. Here are my findings based off what I had to test and figure out. For the most part the wire colors in the CRX match up with the 90-91 format. Aside from the illumiation, which to the best of my knowledge, the red and red/black wires need to be swapped when converting to anything newer….it has something to do with the way the 88-89 dimmer circuit works.

Although he doesnt mention your third plug, I think the best thing to do would be one of two things.

1) Get a 1989 specific CRX Helms manual
2) Use a Digital Multimeter and verify the extra wires to see what they in fact do.

chances are the yellow is constant power and the black is a ground.....

but test first to be sure, witht eh cluster still plugged in, obviously.

Well thanks but that is the page I have seen about 5,072 times, WTF does NOBODY mention the 5pin connector? I have yet to come up w/ a '89 Helms manual that shows me that plug, this is very frustrating to say the least

right, so pull the cluster and hook up a multimeter to it.

id bet 100$ the black is just a ground, and the yellow is just either:

12 volt constant

OR

12 volt ignition

Which means, if you're doing a cluster swap those are inputs that can go unused, and you only need to verify what that third one does.

Its only logical to verify all circuits yourself before interfacing to avoid error.

I do alarms and remote starts for a living and I can't tell you how many times the wiring diagram software has been wrong, and if i didn't verify the circuit myself would have caused tousands of dollars in damage.

Blindly trusting info on the internet isnt really the greatest idea, since you say your **** about your car, the ONLY safe way is to verify it yourself.

A craftsman meter is like 20$ from sears, unless you already have one.

Also, if anyone reading this thread has a 1989 Helms manual please post a scan of the back of the cluster from the electrical portion from book #2 to help this guy out.

^^yeah I have used my multi-meter (snap-on) to identify that the pins are completly different on my '89 vs. my '90-91 unit. based on everything I have looked at I am almost convinced I'll be fine doing this conversion. I am going to be using quick connect butt connectors so I can just unplug it if I ever want a different cluster or OEM again, all I'll have to do is spend $3.50 for 20 connectors for what ever other cluster I wanna swap and it'll be plug-n-play I'll be taking pics also so I can post them in my build thread. either way the blue connector will be left alone so putting my stock cluster back in will be a breeze

Well I just went old school w/ it last night and drove the car w/ the connector unplugged just to see what would happen or stop working for that matter. I don't know what it powers becasue the yel wire is a 12v power supply but nothing changed from driving w/o it. I may not know what it goes to but I now know it does not matter and it's apparently not needed for my specific trim line. I'll be putting in my Ek Si cluster tomorrow so I'll post pics on my build thread, other than that this thread is no longer needed
