coilovers or springs for auto cross?
i am thinkin bout getting coilovers or springs after my greenlights...i wanna drag some but mainly auto cross...i dont have enough money to buy shocks now too. i am thinking skunk 2 coilovers then some compatible shocks/struts later...so what say you?
I think you should save up for both that way you are not paying twice to have your suspension installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled.
Your ride will prolly ride worse than it does now with Skunk2s, aftermarket springs, or any coilover with stock shocks. Since the spring rates are too much for the shock to handle so you will hate your ride.

Huh? Pay to have suspension installed? Takes me about an hour now without air tools to do suspension. I do suggest air tools though if this is the first removal in an old car, the shock bolts that go through the rear LCA's have this tendency to seize and break. Don't ask me how I know
Or, if you're only going to buy one, stay in stock class for autocross and buy shocks only. They will be much more helpful in making the car faster than springs alone.
that aside, a GC coil over setup would be better since you can pick your spring rates and new springs to tune it later are $50-$60 a peice.

You can pick your spring rates with Eibach ERS springs too (same ones GC uses).
I think if you're not going to cornerweight the car, just get a well matched set of springs and shocks.

Skunk doesnt use ERS, GC is the only NA distributor and they wouldnt sell to them, or at least admit it when I asked them directly. which makes me wonder who's really makng their springs, if they were hypercoil you'd think they would advertise that and i dont know of any other reputable competitive spring maker.

also, anyone else get annoyed about the term "coilover"? stock suspension in pretty most japanese cars and some american sedans have coilover system. this term coilover differentiates from suspension designs like used in volkswagons where the spring and shock are separate. what you get with GC is an "adjustable" spring perch. and those tein shocks (the "true" coilovers) that already come with integrated adjustable spring perches are just threaded body shocks.
"coilovers" are not some magical solution that makes handling any better than just buying a preset kit from Eibach or H&R. what an adjustable spring perch gives you is just that, height adjustability (which leads to corner weighting and camber setting), and the option to put custom set springs. However, this adjustablity allows the person to completely set their suspension WRONG if they dont know what they want. And if youre someone who ISNT going to make use of specifically setting your desired ride height, corner weighing and know what spring rates you need to run, and just get GC stock kit, its no better than just getting any one of H&R's kit with your desired level of stiffness and ride height, just for the sake of having a "coilover" suspension. and god help you if you get the "coilover" kit on ebay, theyre just as good as skunk2 kit, or should i say skunk2 is just as good as them.

whichever option you go just don't go cheap and end up having to do it over again...make sure everything is matched and mated to each other, and make sure your not in over youre head dialing it in w/ like 3 gazillion way adj. or sumpthin...
