Shelf life of C16?
I read through VP's website, even read the MSDS document for C16 (scary stuff BTW), and coudln't find the answer... About how long does it keep for, assuming it cannot be guaranteed that it was kept in a temperature controlled environment?
Reason is, a local shop has a sealed can with a 2004 date code on it.. Still good or would I be asking for trouble?

not sure what the shelf life is, but I wouldn't trust 3 year old fuel. Hell, I wouln't even put 3 year old unleaded regular in my DD.
I know that how it is stored has something to do with it.

3 years is a damn long time. i would probably even question a season. but then again, i believe how you store it would also effect shelf life. if you never opened the can then maybe X years? i dont know if it deoxygenates or oxygenates but either or doesnt sound good either.
good question
good question
i seen someone say something about this one other time, supposidly if the fuel never reaches warm temps and it stays in the container and concelled (sp?) doesnt matter if its been open or not...it will maintain its octane levels.
Being sealed is a good thing, I have used fuel thats been in an open drum for a year and did not notice much of a diffrence. But I remember reading somehwere that it drops like 4 octane every 3-4 months. If its a good deal I proabbly go for it. I have used regual unleaded and deseil fuels sealed in drums and it was fine.

I remember asking Hot Rod Performance(so cal) this over a year ago and as long as you dont see any particles floating around then it should be good. As long as it was not kept outdoors then it should be good.

I left a 5-gallon jug of C16 in the bed of my trick for like two weeks. I guess the direct sunlight was not good for it. It separated and all of this yellow gunk settled to the bottom. I shook it up and still ran it, but it left a yellow chalky residue in my pump, filter, and lines. I won't do that again.
I've had half a 5-gallon jug in the garage since last November. Still looks good. I'll probably use it for startup and break in.

i have always gone by the 90 days and its shot rule, with gas and alky....its a shame to throw away 20 gallons of wild mustang at the end of the year but whatever, its not worth the risk

Ha! Thats EXACTLY what I've been doing with the leftover fuel I siphoned from the tank in 2004. I'll be draining whats in my tank again this afternoon, since its been in the car since September. That should be 2-3 gallons more lawnmower fuel!
I ended up finding a shop this morning with fresh fuel in stock, and picked up a new 5 gal pail. It has a June 2007 date code. Thanks for the info everyone.

Many years ago when we ran out of race fuel at a NIRA race. Someone forgot to pack the extra jug. We started asking around to borrow a gallon to make a round. Chris Rado the guy he is offers use 5 gallons for nothing. When we tried to return the favor. He says something along the lines of ...Don't worry about it, We run alcohol and now all I do is put the C16 in the golf cart.

i could see someone converting their mower to alcohol and crying while they mow the lawn.

ive seen a nitrous lawnmower on street fire so a alcohol injected lawnmower is just a matter of time, and also to the guy that commented on c16...i dont even think i can get that in my state...its prolly 2 states away.
As long as C16 is in a sealed container it will last a long time. I drained my tank of C16 last year, put it back in the blue can and ran it this year with no issues. After every track event I drain at least 5 gallons, put in a sealed container and reuse it a month later at other events with no issues, and this is on a rotary.

I have heard that as well from the local shop guys and online resources, as long as you avoid heat and sunlight it holds up pretty well... actually better than pump gas some say.

We use Maximal Leaded from Sunoco which is similar to VP's C16. Rich McCain, Technical/Operations Specialist for Sunoco, said the following
If properly stored, the Maximal should have a shelf life that's measured
in years. Maximal is a very stable fuel. Virtually all of the reactive
components that you would normally find in street gasoline are removed
and we add anti-oxidants to further enhance the life of the fuel.
Storage is the key. The fuel should be sealed in an airtight container
and away from excess heat to keep the more volatile components from
evaporating from the fuel. Ideally the head space in the container
should be kept to a minimum to further reduce the fuels exposure to
oxygen. Another requirement is that the container should not transmit
sunlight. Sunlight will cause the lead in the fuel to breakdown and
become ineffective as an octane booster.
At the very least, given these conditions, I would say the fuel should
be good for at least 2 years.

I know this is a bit off topic, but what about alcohol...methanol and ethanol?? I have a 55 gallon drum from August of last year, it has stayed sealed the whole time, but I'm kind of nervous about running it...I can't seem to get a solid answer
