Default DIY: Restore yellowed, hazed, dull headlights

here is a tutorial with pics on how to restore your dull headlights to like new condition.

Supplies you will need: Sandpaper (800,1000,1500,2000) Meguiars Plast "X", Caranuba wax (i prefer paste), microfiber cloth, some paper towels and soap with a bucket to dunk your sand paper in etc.

okay start sanding, i started with 800 to get out scratches, depending on how deep they are you may start with a lower or higher grit. i started with: 800, 800 wet, 1000, 1000 wet, 1500 wet, and 2000 wet.

when your all done sanding, use the meguiars plast"X" polish as described on the bottle, repeat the application a few times. Apply some caranuba wax to seal the deal. Ps if you use this stuff once in a while they probably wont fade since the wax will protect the plastic from UV rays

I did something similar to this in the Paint and Body section a couple weeks ago. Essentially the same process. However I would recommend that you clay the lenses before proceeding with the sanding, this will help to remove particles and other contaminants which *may* get in your paper and create deeper scratches.

Just remember that you need to re-apply the wax every month or 2, whenever you wax your car just throw some on the headlights.

Nice write up.

Ohgodzirra followed a similar DIY and the turnout was phenomenal.

a really short simple alternitive is rub some turtle wax rubbing compound then some polishing compound. just put on a cloth, rub, wipe off, rinse. done.

im sure the results are nowhere near as good but mine look a hell of alot better than they did before.

<edit> found this pic of mine with that process done.

yea it sucks for me because my drivers side one has water inside of it and it looks like hell. Guessing the seal broke. Already took it out put it in the oven and cleaned it out, put it back out and about 2-3 weeks later the same thing happened agian.

Are the headlights on the 94-97's more prone to yellowing like that? Because the headlights on my 2000 model still look like new.

And yet another and even simpler alternative is to use Mothers Mag polish.
I was like $4.xx from Discount Auto for me.

Take a cloth, put some polish on it and proceed to rub the polish on the headlights. Rub for a few minutes and wipe clean.

The difference is as follows:

They looked like new

well they get yellow with age and weather. since 94-97 are simply older.. theyve had more time to get more yellow.

and damn mac that must be an old pic.

i used PlastiX and applied it with a Porter Cable DA Polisher with an orange lake country cutting pad and was able to achieve similar results. just another option to keep in mind. regardless, it's great to shave off some years off the headlights.

yepp.. it works prettty nicely.
I used that way once or twice, but my dad brought home some of the plasticX cleaner and polish **** so I just started using that instead... Its easier for me just because the cleaner is already in the garage.
