Default Insurance Company Settled - Me: 1, Insurance Company: 0

Well the insurance company (Allstate) finally realized they were taking it in the butthole on this one.

I got super lucky because the appraiser they hired races RX-7's in SCCA and knew all about the Type-R. He came up with a final value just shy of $20K. So I am happy that I got what the car was worth, but sad it came to this.

However...I plan to pick up another R at some point. I should have my new TL-S paid off within a year, and then I can start looking for an R again.

So take this as a "I'll be back later" rather than a "Goodbye" :-)

Side Note: I have Helms Manuals for sale if anyone is interested. I have the primary, as well as the supplement. Both in good condition. Toss me a PM if you are interested!

Well if they come in too low, let me know, and I can recommend this appraiser. He was really friendly, knowledgeable, and honest. He does work for the insurance companies quite often, but told me he doesn't play the whole "I work for the insurance company" game. He worked with me to get all the information and made me feel like he was actually listening to what I had to say regarding the car's limited production, etc.

Oh, and make sure to ask the insurance company for the market report they used in coming up with the value. This will give you an idea why they seem to be low on the value. I will bet that they compared your car with mostly non-R's.

did you have anything major done to the car? i.e. - JDM frontend? I only ask, because I'm worried that if anything ever happened to my ITR, I'd be *** rammed, especially out of the HID front end.

I tend to do a good job with insurance companies. When I totaled my one-year old '00 PY ITR way back when, I got $26K for it from insurance, plus I turned around and sold the damaged car to TypeRmsm for a nice profit as well. So I figure I made out at $30K on that whole deal.

This time the insurance company initially offered $14K. I told them that was way too low and that I needed to see the market report showing where they got this number from (generally insurance companies have a policy that their adjustors must validate their offer amount with a market report). Once I got the market report I saw that I was correct; it had 15 cars on it, with only *ONE* of them being an actual Type-R which was selling/sold for $19K+. From there the adjustor was nice enough to hire an appraiser at no charge to me, and he said if I still felt the appraiser was off on the value I could hire my own appraiser and enter the mediation process (FYI: You pretty much never want to do the mediation process, it sucks, and I have had a family member that is an adjustor for my insurance company tell me it is a waste of time). So I got lucky with the appraiser being an SCCA member who knew about the Type-R. He was a really nice guy all around.

If anyone needs specific information, let me know. I am going to get the appraisal report and catalog it and all my other information just in case anyone else here ever needs it and runs across this post.

Also, if you are looking for a good appraiser for insurance settlement help, please let me know and I can get you contact information for my appraiser. His name was Mike Sheehan.

Were you paying more for additional coverage on your vehicle? Im having a hard time getting insurance on my turbo GSR. None of the major insurance carriers will even give me a quote if the driveline has been modified from stock. KBB value on my vehicle is only 9k but I would like to have my vehicle insured for at least 20k to cover the modifications if stolen/totaled.

Onyx00,
It looks like I'm going the distance with the insurance company on my claim. Can you please send Mike Sheehan's contact information to me?

Thanks,
Michael.
