Default who here had the kart that was carried on the back of a civic

I remember a while ago someone posted a pic of a mount they had made to carry a racing kart on the back of a civic/crx. I'm thinking of doing the same for my accord to avoid having to store a trailer.

Did it use a 1-1/4" receiver hitch?

I'm debating whether to convert an existing rack or just make something custom.

Thanks
Matt

That would be me...I had it posted on the the old Karting web sight. I built a square tube fram that bolted to the hole that the ball fit in. I also had two braces running from the bottom of the frame to the Civic tow hook. I had two half clamps and one around the frame cross bar to hold it to the frame. I'll try to take a few pics today and post it here monday.

Well here is the pic, allways good for a few laughs, but it does get me to the races. The hitch is rated for 150 lbs, I figure the kart and rack are pretty close to that. I'll post a pic of the rack when I get the pic software fixed.

I wonder what the added weight created by the force on the belly pan is at 50 MPH? My guess is allot. I wouldn't suggest doing that with a shifter, all of the case oil would drain out through the vent and make a big mess, that and the first time that you forget to put oil in when you get you the track you would be hosed.

It sure does add some drag to the civic, but nothing it could not handle, the only other trait it had was it would blow off the intake silencer every time unless I tie wraped it on.
As far as the rack, I really dont think you need the steel frame, I just needed a way of getting the heigth adjusted. I think the 6" alum. channel with a angle plate would do just find. The 3 holes on each side of the channel is where the axel half clamps go...there being used for a vertical cart stand now.

Default wowsers that's tall!

whoa! Ok, so how do people transport their carts other than this? Would one of those small utility trailers (like miatas use for hauling race rubber) work?

I didn't realize just how much that would just up above the roof line.. could you imagine somehow forgetting about that and driving into a parking garage?

Ooo, pipe class yamaha My family

Sidenote- if you're a featherweight like me, your kart will weigh over 150 for it to meet minimum kart/driver limits, and on top of that, my brothers race too, so we have a little trailer with 3 karts stacked in, I can take pics if people are interested.

I'm all for this turning into a "post pics of how you get your karts to the track" thread!

Alright, I just got back from work, so it's all dark now, but I'll get up in the morning and get some pics up. We only have a 6' X 6' X 10' box trailer, but 3 karts fit in level and still gives you access to do minor things to the engine and clutches.

Thanks for the pics.

I have an old boat trailer that I converted to haul the kart plus 8 autocross tires for the tow vehicle (formerly GSR, then civic, now Accord).

I just moved and don't really have room to store the trailer, so I was thinking of how to mount it on the back of the Accord. I think I can lean it up over the trunk so that it doesn't protrude over the roof line, and also support some of the weight on the trunk lid.

All just thoughts for now, I need to rebuild the motor before I can use it anyways.

Also, to move last weekend we rented an enclosed Uhaul trailer for $25/day with unlimited mileage, another option for those looking to have fun with a kart but don't have tons of room.

Got my pics all done finally. The album is here: http://www.redpepperracing.com/gallery/album46 the basic idea is this:

The top rack is hinged on sliders to turn the top into a ramp for easier loading and unloading.

You should pull the civic with the cart.

We transported a friend's kart on top of the rollcage of his family VW Thing a couple of times. Once, we stopped on the access road to Seattle International Raceway (now Pacific Raceways), so Brian could suit up and get into the kart seat for the drive into the pits. We claimed to be doing aero testing on Highway 18 from Issaquah...
