Problem w/ the thru-out bearing using Competition Clutch twin disc
Just installed the twin disc clutch on buddy's DA integra cable tranny 92-93 and the center piece of the bearing w/c look like made of plastic was eat up by the fingers of the pressure plate. The clutch came w/ it's own pilot and thru-out bearing but I had to purchased a brand new bearing from Acura due to the thru-out bearing that comes w/ the kit is for hydro transmission w/c don't have the holes on both side for the return spring to hook up to. The reason I noticed that the bearing was chewed up because the case on the gear side where the passenger axle goes to, crack in 360*. Here's some pix I took so you know what I'm talking about.

These are the same bearing off cable version tranny. The one on the right is an old bearing and to the left is a brand new bearing. Look at the top of the bearing, the one on the left was hitting the fingers of the pressure plate causing it to chewed off.
Now look at these pictures,

the one on the center is from a hydro tranny bearing, you don't see the elavated plastic looking thingy on top while the other 2 bearings off cable tranny have the plastic sticking out. The piece on the right side is the material from the chewed bearing.
the one on the right is off cable tranny, to the left is hydro.

Here's the broken piece off the gear case:

And here's where the broken piece come from:

I'm not saying the bearing cause the case to crack like that. What i'm trying to figure out why the cable type bearing is getting eat up by the pressure plate. Is there any special type of bearing I can use to not do this? Maybe I can just file the plastic down farther so it wont touch the plate? anyone w/ cable tranny using CC twin disc setup? and do you have this problem? what bearing are you using. Yes, we just had the tranny rebuilt w/ carbon synchros and had the quaife LSD put on. I was thinking maybe there was some clearance issue when the tranny was put together. Anybody have any idea? thank you all
You are supposed to grind down the plastic so that the bearing(the metal part) rides on diaphram. The one from competition comes like that already done. Since you got it from acura then you'll need to grind down the plastic down to the bearing.

here is what we had to do with our throwout bearing, (using tilton clutch's) i know this is a hydro trans, but it should be similar on your trans. if you can notice, the center plastic is grinded down to below the surface that would ride the fingers on the PP.

Thanks for the reply, what did you use to grind the plastic down where it is below the surface of the metal part? did you have to bring that to a machine shop? My buddy bought the kit from a distributor but they sent the hydro bearing w/ it instead. No problem, I'll just grind the rest of the plastic that is sticking up on that bearing and that should be fine. Thank you all for the help.
yea, what does happen if you don't trim it? I just installed my twin disc but I got it second hand and used a new throw out bearing from a CC stage 5 kit I had laying around. I never really noticed that it was trimmed down or not, and I wasn't even aware that I had too, now I'm worried
I've been driving on the clutch now for about 2 weeks and have had no problems, will I come into any problems if the throw out bearing wasn't trimmed down? thanks.

As you can see on the above pix, the outer plastic was ground off but not completely, and I found some pieces of plastic still hanging and some are burned off and got stuck to the diaphram. It could have damage my diaphram. Good thing I took the tranny out and found this problem, the clutch have only 20 miles on it.
I may be lucky that it did not damage the diaphram and bented it. One thing for sure when the first time we start the motor up and put it in gear that we can hear grinding noise, cluttering and weird sound coming from the tranny and we don't know what it was then, it was the plastic getting ground down by the diaphram ha! ha!
sorry to bring this back. i do have a question. i too had this problem before but took care of it the following day. my question is if i dd the car for lets say couple of months. the only thing i have to replace is pressure plate and throw out bearing? i have this issue on my itr with act clutch and dont have anytime to take care of this. thanks.
