upper nut on the shock (cant take it apart) help! 14mm
you know what im talking about, the 14mm nut in the shock assemebely holding the top hat on.
i tried using an allen to hold the shock tube but its all stripped.
am i just going to have to get a new shock? I also tried holding the rob with vice-grips but it just damages the shock even more.
anyone? EDIT: i ended up cutting the shock itself in half.... got some oem replacements.
this is what im talking about...................

an air impact wrench would make short work of that.
but yes, once the allen slit is stripped the shock is pretty much hosed. You can logically cut a slit into the end and use a huge screwdrive to hold it, but reusing the shock is not wise.

put the shock back on the car. drive to a shop, have them use an impact wrench to take off the nut. then put it back on, loosely.
take the shock back off at home and compress the spring safely then unzip. should be much easier now that was already loosened.

Lets hope you were using a spring compressor, cuz if u would have gotten that nut off, youd probably have a serious injury..

ive done that,.. theres nothing dangerous about it, just have the shock in a vice sidways and knock the nut off.
BOINGGGGGGGGGGGGG
p.s. i think that allen head is metric, you might have used a standard and fucked it up..

You can see the spring compressor in his hand.

I've done this about 14 times, the shock doesnt have enough force to break bones-but it will hurt like a Bitch if it hits you. just use some spray on rust remover and an impact wrench, should get the job done. Remember to lay it on its side and (whearing boots) step on the spring.
The jolt might startle you, but it works like a charm
