hmmm notice the spark plugs are on the front of jdm one, and the spark plugs are on the back of the one your friend bought. hmmm in not sure what the deal is with that but also there isnt even a vtec selinoid on your buddies, i dont think that is a jdm d15. seems almost like the head from your buddies is missing, or taken off

I'm not sure if you realize this, but there is more than one kind of D15B. There are ones similar to a D15B7, D15B8, etc. Not every single D15B is a 3-stage VTEC motor.
Looks like a D15B block with a D15B7 head.
Here are the JDM models with the D15B:
Civic MX 1.5L SOHC CARB
Civic VTi 1.5L SOHC VTEC
Civic ETi 1.5L SOHC VTEC-E

Now, that first link doesn't even say the engine code, but for arguement's sake let's just assume it is the D15B.
But that first link you posted doesn't list three 1.5L. It lists four.
Dual Carb
Single Carb
VTEC
VTEC-E
And you're overlooking one BIG thing. D15Bs did not just come in Civics.
The pages you just linked might be Honda's site, but the codes Eran just quoted from me are directly from the JDM EPC (from Honda).

All SOHC 1.5L were D15B. I know D15Bs didn't come just on the Civics, and I also have the same JDM EPC as him (just lazy to use it). Both sources (link and EPC) are from Honda, so there isn't any discrepancies.

Well, we can eliminate the CARB models since the pic above shows a nice skinny IM.

As me too. Either way though, as the list shows, there are more than just the ones you mentioned.

I quoted the carb models because your other post quoted one of them, as though to say there were three.

I know. It's late at night and don't want to do a full background check.

Regardless of what this is, it would seem very odd to me that they would do all the work of a headswap. This motor was placed in the car because it was a cheap alternative. This car was used for hauling wood down dirt roads. It's bone stock and filthy, other than the motor.
Why would you swap the head, other than the fact that it's difficult to make 3-stage work (though very easy to make work like a standard SOHC VTEC motor)?

From what I know 3-Stage VTEC works like this:
1.At low rpms, only 1 intake valve is opened and 2 exhaust valves are open for enhanced breathing.
2.At mid range rpms both intake valves open with 2 exhaust valves open too.
3.At high rpms the high lift lobe attaches to the 2 intake lobes in the cylinder and this goes to all four so 4 high lift lobes attaches to 8 regular low lift lobe(intake only)This stage is VTEC as we know it.
To the OP.
That looks like a D15B block(no ****) with a D15B7 head.Cant be sure without the code.

Hrm, so that's the conclusion?
JDM D15B block
USDM D15B7 head
VTEC valve cover
Wow, talk about a hybrid, its deceiving as ****. So with the B7 head it's NOT VTEC..but the block is from the VTEC model...so it's basically a reverse mini-me?
(For some reason I doubt this...it's probably just a JDM D15B through and through)
EDIT:

That's the basic idea...VTEC-E in the lower end, and VTEC in the upper end.
Just get some of the names right as there's no lobes in the cylinder, and some other word mix-ups etc. but yeah that's how it works.
