So I stopped by maaco in my 00 hatch yesterday to get an estimate on getting my trim, sideskirts, door handles, etc. paint matched to my car. A buddy of mine with the same style hatch got his done there and turned out fine. Told me it ran him $150.
So the guy comes out and I show him what I want painted. He says, "$375"
And I'm like, "Don'y you guys paint whole cars for $189 and $399"
And he was like, "Um yeah but this stuff has to get prepped and masked"
me: "It's rough plastic, not metal, and all of this stuff comes off, so minimal masking required."
So he told me he can't do it for any less than that and waved goodbye.
So I think I'm down to painting the crap myself. I'll be ordering some paint from http://www.paintscratch.com here soon.

The whole $189 paint job is bullshit, as long as one of there macco locations in the united states offers it for $189 then they can legally advertise it. So if there is a macoo is alaska selling a paint job for $189 then they can advertise it. We got a car painted there in NYC and it cost like $1800. (It was my grandfathers K car so he didnt give a **** about $$$)

just remember the quality of a paint job all depends on how good the prep work has been done. at the very least you will need to sand it down and de grease the surface to be painted.

Doesn't need to be prepped? Have you ever painted a car before? 99% of the job IS the prep.
It HAS to be prepped and well at that! If you don't prep it right, the job is horrible. You're complaining about a $375 paint job? I would have waved goodbye to you too. He knew you weren't worth his time after that moment.
Some people amaze me with their over confidence and lack of knowledge.

at the very least i'd wipe the mouldings down with rubbing alcohol.
The plastic on sideskirts and mouldings is kinda rough anyways, it's not glossy at all. It looked like a plenty good enough surface for painting to me.
Remember, i'm not painting my whole car. Don't bash on me so hard.

damn that's expensive. i pretty much got the same things on my hatch paint matched, and it only cost me 100 bucks. i didnt look at the big business shops, and just went to a local shop and it came out good.
but good luck on doing it yourself. cant wait to see the outcome

Thanks, all the parts are removable, so minimal masking will be required.
I'm ordering tafetta white from http://www.paintscratch.com
I'll post pics once I finally get it finished.

People are bashing you do to the sheer ignorance you are displaying. You cannot just spray paint on any surface you think is “ok”. It will need to be prepared prior to paint. To add to that your saying it’s easy with minimal masking because you can take the parts off. Were you going to take the parts off or have them do it?

one of my buds has a friend who owns a maaco and gave me the exact price of wat he would give me to get my car painted a diff color it would cost me 400 bucks im thinking about it not too sure though cuz i like the stock color on my car now
macco wanted 1600 to paint my car.
they will also cut the rear 1/4 panels out and weld the new ones in.
the onyl thing that sucks about it was the fact that every dent you wanted them to fix will add to the cost.
my friends macco paint job 800 bucks

A good maaco can do an excellent job. I've seen great paint come out of The one here in Phoenix.
So When I sand my trim, what grit sandpaper should I use?
Primer? Clearcoat?

Why don't you just get dupli color spray cans at Autozone? They work pretty good as long as you do a good prep. Dupli color has good clear coat cans too. I painted the side molding, side skirts, side mirror, and front lip. They all turned out pretty nice, it just takes patiences. Be sure to use Primer Sealer before paint. I actually getting my whole car painted at Maaco right now, if you want updates on it, go to the link i paste on bottom.

i've never seen a good job from any maaco? but i guess that's just me. just scuff your mouldings w/ a red schotch brite pad, clean them off really well and spray them. primer sealer is a good idea, but not necessary. as for the side skirts i'd prolly use 320 grit to kinda knock down the roughness then go back over them w/ 600, clean and spray. ****'s not hard, just don't be a jackass and not prep. prep is what makes the paint job look good.
Time is money if he spends two hours on the removal and prep thats almost 100 bux already and then you have to pay for materials and his overhead. When you look at it like that it starts to make sense?
