I plan on using one. I road race, and sometimes the heat at Thunder Hill & Sears Point gets high. I plan on piecing one together rather than spend the big $$$ for a name brand. All the parts can be bought at http://www.racerpartswholesale.com

I put one in my CRX very recently. Even in cold weather, my oil temp was up at around 260 - 270 under race conditions. With the cooler, it now holds at about 220 no matter how high the ambient temps get. Definately worth the money!

Here's two links:

Not to steal the thread, but what would be involved in using the new oil cooler loop to grab oil pressure and temp?

Damns, thats pretty freaking expensive for a 'mocal' setup. What brands do you guys have. I know theres a summit one thats like $100, and doesnt Greddy make one?

Yea, summit has a B&M oil cooler setup for imports for $109. How much different could it be than that other expensive kind?

Oil cooler is a good thing... it keeps your oil at a nice temp.. and addes a couple of quarts...
it also makes hooking up gauges much easier and it looks cool

http://www.absoluteradiator.com has a selection of coolers too. I couldn't be happier with a vendor, they have amazing service (I purchased a radiator from them).

SS hoses vs. rubber, earls fittings vs crimp-on fittings, and you can pick your size/configuration if you don't buy a kit. The difference is pretty big. Think about this...who well will your car run if an oil hose fitting lets go?

YES IT IS....but I don't regret it one bit...that's my car by the way. I have been to the track 6 times since it was installed...and so far zero problems and zero oil temps over 230 degrees. I spent a lot of money to keep it in the car with all the factory parts and I use all factory holes for mounting/routing the hoses. A person willing to go with a cheaper cooler, and ditch the thermostat...which works great by the way....and use only straight AN connectors...you could easily cut my bill in half.

I started this project as a simple deal....BUT it blossomed into a huge project. Using my experinces though you should be able to do the same for a lot less

Anyway....that's my 2 cents on it

Cheers'

If you have an extra 600 beans sitting around i could see it being worth it. If i had it i would do it. I would really like an oil cooler, but that just is waaay too much for me, for just an oil cooler. Even the Greddy one is almost $600 and it comes with some rubber hose in the kit

I took a whack at installing one in my car once. I pieced it together myself, with a 24 row cooler and a thermostatic valve and SS hose for about $150. I was hoping to go road racing with less of a heat fear.

The problem I ran into was the damn hose. It's so stiff that putting 1/2" nipple fittings into it was beyond difficult. I ended up ruining the cooler and selling the rest of the parts to someone.

If you can find a kit that has the fittings and hoses already cut and put together, you'll save yourself at least $200 of pain in the ***/very difficult work, IMO.

If I had to do it again on my GSR, I'd spend $350 for a pre-made kit rather than doing it myself.

And I'd never accept any hose that doesn't have the appropriate SAE rating for handling hot, pressurized motor oil.

Don't have an extra 600 bones...well let's see what we can do ( I got my cash from selling a car by the way...so I saw it as extra money ) I have my handy WWW.RACERPARTSWHOLESALE.COM catalog handy

Tru cool cooler 24 row $44.95
Sandwhich plate..uses stock oil filter....it will fit your Civic...it won't on an R $ 24.99
Pipe thread to AN adapters...in steel for cost.....4 X $2.79
AN hose ends...al straight so make them work 4 X $7.74
Lets say 10 feet of hose so we have plenty of extra left over 10 X $5.65

if my math is right this comes out to $ 168.56

Plus shipping of about 20 bones or so. So you can have a do able and very effective cooler for about 200 dollars in your car. You keep the stock filter and filter location with the use of the sandwhich plate and you get cool oil to boot. YOu don't get the remote filter, but you can always add to this later if you want the extra easy during oil changes. The sandwhich plate will not work in the R cars due to some bracing that is in there. This added a lot of money to my install. I also bought the most exspensive parts...why? you ask....I don't know...because I had the extra money and I didn't want to spend it on neon lights or stickers

Hope this helps you out!

If you need any help...let me know!

The B&M will work but it didn't fit properly on my ITR. Ended up having to by more hose and adapters at Earls'. My suggestion is to peice meal it from Earl's or buy the one from Jackson Racing. At the time of my install, the JR wasn't ready. It runs about $300 but I'm sure the quality is worth it and it comes with everything that you need. The other thing I would suggest is a baffled oil pan. The Mugen is a stock b series oil pan with baffles welded in it. I smoked my ITR engine at a track day a Willow Springs (didn't have the cooler or pan) with only 9k miles on the car. Since then, I installed the cooler & pan and have run 3 track days with no problems.

Except for abrasion resistance, there isn't anything fundamentally wrong with the right rubber hoses for oil cooler installation. I have done several with good quality industrial hose and press-on barbed tubular fittings. It is pressure rated to something like 600psi - you just have to isolate it where it might touch anything. Of course it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, which sucks... Oh, wait - no, it doesn't!

Having said that, the hose in the picture looks a little skinny.

You are right about the rubber hoses, but I have seen some that start to blow up like baloons when under pressure. It isn't a comforting thought to me. I prefer the braided hose....so that is what I bought. It really is a preference thing. I haven't seen a braided hose burst...I have seen the rubber ones. That is why I bought braided

It's very easy to piece together. Yes...the site has all those parts available. I got it straight from their print catalog on my desk. The hardest part is getting the cooler mounted, and routing the lines so it will clear all the moving parts in the engine bay. Keep in mind you want to keep the lines as short as possible. You don't want to stress out the oil pump. I only noticed a small pressure drop in my install. The pressures are still WAY above the minimums called out by Honda, and I have had no problems.

Also you need to keep in mind that you need to give your car extra time to warm up with a cooler installed.....you have more oil to warm, so take and extra 5 minutes before reving the engine to redline after you start it. It takes my oil about 10 mimutes to get to 180 degrees.

Oh...when assembling the hoses. I wrapped the fitting in elctrical tape to help cut down on marring the finish....got to keep that bling bling going with those anodized fittings

Remember that you end up with gauges as a part of the deal too. Gauges and sending units = $$$

anyone know if a oil cooler affect the oiling system in a R motor? since some JDM aftermarket tuner(like spoon) does not recommand to put a oil cooler in a stock R motor.

Eep! Those were NOT the right rubber hoses.

Oh yeah...those gauges and the bezel for the gauges...forgot about those...they are a BIG help.

Thanks for pointing that out Karl
