DIY Wheel Bearing Removal/Install - How Do I Pop It out with a slide hammer? Make the tool?
I need to change my drivers side wheel bearing on the front. I was searching through all the threads and read that instead of pressing everything off and on you can simply use a slide hammer to remove the bearing and tighten the axle nut back on to push it back in
I need to get this done on a saturday morning and I dont have access to a shop nor do I even own a slide hammer but I can make one tomorrow at work. Need to know what it has to be sized like.
Anyone have any ideas on what size I need to make it (dimensions etc)
Also, Ive never swapped a wheel bearing. I dont even know where it is. If you know how to use this method could you walk me through it. I know there are c-clips and such i believe but dont know exactly what needs to come off etc.
I need to do this with handtools on a cold canada day in a driveway. Wont be pretty. Need help
Hope someone can help

You have to use a 10 ton press to insert and remove the bearing,,,,, There is no other way.......

there is a way without the press, you need like $40 to $50 in tools. I've done it twice myself its just easier to have shop do it. and i didn't use a slide hammer either.

I thought there was a special slide hammer with an attachment that locked onto the bearing to get it out. But to get them back in you do need to use a press.

I heard to get it back in you can use the axle nut and tighten it back down with something pressing the bearing Im guessing and back in it goes
I want to take as little off the car as possible, but if I have to make a slide hammer, i need to know what to make it like

Ok so basically the entire front end of this car needs to come apart to get this hub off then eh
i have done many pressed in wheel bearings without a press by simply getting a long pipe a hair smaller in diameter than the wheel bearing hole and sticking it in there and then prying to one side and the bearing pops out with a little persuation. i don't know if this will work on the front knuckles but i've done it a bunch of times on rears. to put it back in i keep the bearing in the freezer for a day and heat up the knuckle pretty much cherry red and tap the new bearing into play, slides right in.
you need a press. slide hammer will not save you any time or money.
follow the helms instructions.

I would just pull it off and find someone with a press...
[I also bought one just to do this but I am glad I did..]
Remove tire/wheel,brake caliper and brake caliper bracket, then rotor,
remove axle nut,
remove stabilizer bar link nut on one side and remove outer tie rod..
remove cotter pins and nuts and separate upper and lower ball joints,
press out the hub, remove inner circlip then bearing.I think that is about it..

So I call canadian tire adn they want 2 hours labour to press in an out this bearing
$160, expletive that
Shops make it hard to do things the right way

What he said, Canadian Tire is a jip for getting any type of work done. Start calling around man... its as easy as whipping out the phone book and dialing 7 numbers.
My work has a press but I didnt have access to it this weekend thats why I was just gonna try and do it without
I'll just hold off on changing it til during the week when I can have at that press
Id like to know the best/easiest way to press it in and out though
The press Im going to be using is basically just to flat surfaces that squish together, how I can make that press the bearing out I dont know
I believe its a 6ton

There is a pic here of one that I'm sure is similar..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...sting
It uses a bolt/nut to provide tension to remove and install
the bearing.. Like a ball joint press..
For the price,It might be worth a shot...
