My car had code 17 before I did the swap,
The speedometer always worked fine..
I checked everything by the manual
and eventually replaced the dash cluster..
no problems since..

i see....ive been wondering if there is something in the cluster that senses if the speedo cable is in or out...when i put this car together i used a bunch of random harness' and now half my cluster doesnt work...i was thinking it might be a possibility that the circuit for the speedo(if there even is one) might not be getting power and throwing the code when it goes into vtec...it only throws the code after ive hit vtec...drive around on low cam all day and i wont throw ****...
also i used the cluster from my old hatch and it always worked fine...never dropped it or anything when transfering...
is the vss something i can tune out?

Check to make sure the two screws are present and tight..
The thing in the top pic is what creates a pulse that the ecu
uses to determine vehicle speed..
