Default cel code 17 please help.

i got a b16a2 and i have a cel count of 17 (vss). i have a bad cluster, the speed gage wont work and rpm's gage wont work. my question is could the bad cluster be the reason why the cel code 17 goes on?

Never heard of a cluster causing cels. Did you check the VSS?

If you unplug the cluster, does CEL 17 remain or go away. If it remains, the cluster is not causing code 17.

im having a hard time finding the vss on the trany. if you could some how post a pic of the vss with its location that would be nice. i should also mention that the b16a2 is in a 96 hatch with all 99-00 wiring. so if disconnect the cluster i wouldnt be able to see what code im getting. unlike the obdo ecu.

this is why i thought maybe i could of been my cluster:

i got this off a an older post on honda tech when i googled.

"The VSS is on the back of the gauge cluster. It sends the signal to the ECU. It is driven by the speedo cable which comes off the sender which is in the tranny. The cable NEEDS to be installed. All of the above applys if USDM cluster is in the car."

is this right or wrong?

The VSS is NOT on the back of the cluster. It sits atop the transmission. Your speedo does not use a cable. Ignore that post.

You can check for the code with a code reader after unplugging the cluster.

Define all wiring, because running a '99 - '00 engine harness with a '96 - '98 underdash harness will result in no speedometer or tach.

You need a basic digital multimeter to test the VSS circuit. A multimeter allows you to measure voltage, resistance, and current.

i should also mention that after i did the b16 swap my speed cluster and rpms worked but after a while my speedo stopped working and my rpms followed months after so im almost sure its my cluster. but still not sure if my vss is gone bad... so how can you tell if your vss has gone bad.

Find a friend with a code reader.
