Default Car died last night - coolant all over road + loss of power - any ideas?

So I was getting on the highway last night with Shakes, floored it on the ramp, and at the top of 2nd gear I hear a *snap/pop* and the car starts dying. It was as if the engine was braking even though I was still pressing the gas pedal. When we pulled over, there was coolant all over the road, it was dripping from somewhere on the right (drives) side of the engine bay. Car also wouldnt start again. Any ideas? TIA

Peter

the drivers side is the left. is that what you mean?

is there any oil with this antifreeze? check your oil and see if there is antifreeze in the oil.

Your water pump probably went out and might have taken the timing belt with it... No bueno.

I meant right side facing the car, left sitting in it. There doesnt seem to be antifreeze in the oil, I just did an oil change earlier that day so its fresh stuff - would I be able to tell just by looking on the dipstick?

entire engine was rebuilt about 10k ago - so it has all fresh components - hope it wasnt that. What is the likelihood of it being a hose snapping?

well if your timing belt broke it would be like loss of power. it'd be more like no power at all. i'd say maybe cracked block or headgasket. w/e could be the belt and pump correlation...

Slim...if your hose snapped it should still start. You should take your timing cover off and take a look at the belt and see if there is any damage. My bet it is that.

If in fact it is that, how would it account for the coolant? I assume then there are cooling jackets all around the balance shaft? or did it possibly pop another seal?

its the only other belt in there. It has to to be the balancer shaft belt.

I wasn't doubting aries, yet rather asking a question aimed at the cooling system setup.

All things considerd, how doable is this with the engine in the car? seems like alot of stuff you have to get to in a small space.

Master belly fat, plopped onto the 5' jack handle. ****** crank pulley bolt

And I stand corrected, its 2 extensions and a ratchet.
