Lake Superior Rally this weekend in Houghton, MI
Honda maniacs,
The second biggest rally of the year get's kicking this weekend in the college town of Houghton, Michigan. Home to Michigan Tech. Second to last round of the Rally America Championship.
http://www.rally-america.com/index.php
Currently there are 5 Honda/Acura's entered of 62cars total, many 2wd cars.
http://www.lsprorally.com/entries.html
Thanks to some advice on these pages, I've got my Type R ready to rip in G2 with:
-ABS removed, SI prop valve + lines, Race Fluid + Carbotech XP10's.
-Re-Engineered rear controls arms 0.120"wall vs. 0.052", STPR did'nt go so well...
-Silverstone S525 / Pirelli K40 gravel tires + Blizzack Revo1 snow
We had a good test a month ago, on dry gravel, and we're fired up for G2, 17cars, one of the biggest showings all year.
Rally starts at 2pm on Friday in Houghton. Restarts on Saturday at 9am.
Come by service and say hi!
Here's a Pete Kuncis pic. from the practice stage at STPR this summer, that's about as far as we made it......

Good luck at LSPR. Like to make it out there sometime.
We'll be at Mt. Hood in Oregon, goal is a single digit overall finishing position and overall 2wd podium and Production class win.. Drove the car today, got it dailed in this weekend!
Send me the pictures of your new control arm setup sometime.

I ran Charlevoix in 99' in a Neon ACR and 2000 in an Eclipse. Most awesome rally I've ever run. 99', 1/2 pavement, through towns of 1000's of spectators going crazy. Either Bataram or LesErables most awesome gravel stage ever. In 99' I think there were 10,000 people on Bataram alone!
The conditions this weekend are going to be crazy. It's going to come down to who takes the most chances in the slippery stuff and who has the best tire setup.
I have not had a consistant co-driver yet, so hav'nt had the feeling to go total commitment start to finish. Hopefully things will gel before the other 17 guys do.....
Rotten, the new arms weigh 5.4lbs each so they may even make it through one of your west coast rallies......

It's probobly going to be wet on Friday, possibly dryer on Saturday. Herman's going to be a puddle fest. Delaware/Brockway/Burma should be ok. I'm doubting snow conditions, possibly only on Friday's Kenton stages, but have them mounted and ready.
The conditions never seem to affect the spectators, they are usually pretty fired up by Saturday on the Delaware Delta.....
Introduce yourselves at the services!

It was a good weekend! Just now recovering......
Friday night we had good times, about 3rd 2wd overall, but we stuffed it in some loose stuff and lost 5 min. Oh well, that's rally. The margin for error in this sport is pretty thin. Anyway, we won our class on the second day, but took much less risk. '
Overall the car is handling bad axx. The brakes are a 100% inprovement, and no, the XP10's are not too much compound for rally, we left foot brake the hell out out of the things and the braking was awesome. I was all freaked out thinking I was going to have put some $$ race brake setup on there, but after the SI prop valve and XP10's, and new rear pistons, I'm not changing anything, it's perfect.
I hav'nt run this event in 6years and forgot what type of pounding the car takes. The new rear arm setup is completely validated. I'm going beefcake on every other suspension component. Not the circle track stuff I though I could use. The rod-end rear is super precise, but probobly would'nt last more than 6 races on Cendiv type surfaces before it'll loosen up, probobly less out west like Rotten runs. One rod end is already loose, but less so than my friends' cheap non-lined setup. FK nylon lined. I'm still sticking with it, no more rubber. The Infinity Q45 wheels are beefcake, and took some big hits, still perfect true.
So, now it just needs more power! I can't believe it, 96K miles, stock powertrain, including original clutch. I could have used more diff. lock up, and more final drive, but that will be done all in good time. I think the Jackson Supercharger is calling for this thing next.
MORE HONDA RALLY CARS!

you boys need to try harder.. i know for a fact an integra can get more air than this on brockway mountain drive

also, one would think G2 is the perfect place for that car, would a JRSC bump you to open with the big boys, or would you be allowed in G5? IME not much competition in G5...
I think the late Mark Lovell proved that flying lower on Brockway is the fastest line. Go figure.
The supercharger would put us in G5 with Cary Kendal (SRT4) and Utecht's (ARCA v-8 powered Mustang). Those guys are the benchmark 2wd cars/drivers. Doug Shepherd (SRT4) is beyond us all.
My car at 2450lbs should require about 250whp to be in that leaque. In the begining it will be much lower than this.
Honda's are great rallycars, I hope to see more nicely prepared ones in the future.

That's what i'm saying.
Great pics and details. Are you going to be competing in any events in CA?

That would be no. CA is a very long way away from us. When I lived out there I used to mountain bike on the Gorman roads. Let's just say, I'd build a very different type of car for those roads......
Big time beefcake. Like off-road truck type beefcake. Big suspension travel, big tubular structures.

We won G2 the second day divisional (Keweenaw).

I went there to get a new Codriver up to speed, so I gave us a good saftey margin, except for the corner where we lost 5min. friday night...... Snodrift we will be up to speed. 100AW or STPR or Cherokee Trails we will be up to speed on gravel, hopefully with a supercharger. Still don't have everything in place to go real good, but were getting there. This sport takes many elements to get very good results (Cajones alone usually just puts you into the woods...):
-Good handling car, predictable
-Good Co-driver, accurate calls, good confidence, no mistakes, super responsive to speed
-Smooth, thinking-based driving, no mistakes
-Good crew/spare parts
-Good tires
More Honda rally teams!

I know Matt.
He was just saying what a great idea it is to spend $6500 per WRC event to run in the Ford Fiesta Cup. Still trying to figure that deal out.
I hope Matt will build another car and have fun racing it.
