Default Something different for the fabrication section -- Carbon related

We just got finished designing some roofs for honda challange cars and pro SCCA racers. All of these cars have cages.

These caps are designed for full race cars. You cut your roof off and replace it with this.

Most carbon parts are not very rigid. If you took a carbon hood off its frame and picked it up from the middle you can almost get the ends to touch. Here is a picture of a ViS Mugen style hood for a civic. We picked the most ridged part of the hood and added pressure. This is about 10lbs of pressure before it bowed in

Here is our full race cap. I am free standing on it with 160lbs and it still does not bow in. These are fully engineered race car parts with a foam core. Plus they only weigh 4lbs. They are made with 4 layers of carbon fiber and a layer of .5oz CSM to hold the core in

Fully vacuum formed with resin injection

Thanks to JDMDan for the pics - This was not the race one but it shows what they look like installed

well we offer 2 types of roof caps. The one I am standing on you would need to cut your roof off leaving about 2 inches all around and pop rivet this roof on, the second we offer is what is pictured installed and that is a cap that goes over your existing roof. Just about all our customers that buy the normal ones take their sunroof out and use this as a cap. They will also get a ITR headliner and completly cap it from the inside. Also these have a lot more carbon then a carbon hood due to the multiple layers of carbon. I am prototyping the 96-00 coupe and 92-95 civic hatch right now. We will have the EK hatch soon too

we have considered making products like that but our plate is SO FULL with other projects we have work all the way till 2008! So the time factor is a big thing and something like that would take a lot of R&D and also a lot of resources just to get the first one made

Crazy, how much does the stock roof weigh? (the piece that is cut out for the race version)

The foam core looks similar to what they use in our race boats.

it is a process we invented. We use a large weave fabric and the way we make it, it looks like little puddles of water

here is a civic hood we did, this pic is before we put the hood together

also thanks for the props guys!! We rae designing some kevlar hoods for a couple honda-challange cars and also working with an exotic car company which I can not name, we might be making the engine covers for them, they will be stock on a $300,000 car so I really really hope that goes through!

That is one of my favorite fabric styles What kind of tip do you use to spray the gel coat with that effect, is it some sort of splatter tip? Good luck on the exotic deal as well.
