Default car shutting off ... electric?

1995lx accord ... 207K

i was driving to a restaurant tonight, at a red light, and my car shuts off. stereo still on, headlights still on, etc. i try restarting it, it starts but dies right away. this happens several times. i finally get it going and pull into a gas station. .... fill up gas, check oil ... standard stuff, everything checks out.

i get to the restaurant, eat, and on the way home my guages start acting all cooky ... going down to zero and such. .... then about a mile from home, the car dies again but stereo and lights are still on ... then randomly the gas kicks in for about 2 seconds and then it shuts off again. i sat there with my hazards on for about 2 minutes and it started right up and i got home ... this is where i stand.

what in the hell is going on here?! alternator?

...ok, made it to work (20 miles) ... was worried though ...

when i went to start it this morning, 2 times it started and immediately died ... like 2 seconds after starting. 3rd time was a charm ...

about 10 miles into my drive, my guages started acting cooky again, jumping all over the place ... so i pulled over in case it died, but it never did...

...i REALLY need help with this, this car is not safe to drive right now as it can just shut off at any time and i have no idea how long it'll take to get it started again

i just had the alternator, batter, and battery connections checked ... all fine.

it's electrical somewhere. at the auto parts store it wouldn't start for about 20 minutes. i'd turn it over, it'd start, then die. that's it. it just dies before it really kicks in, but the starter is 100% fine.

PLEASE someone have an answer, i'm getting despearate here.

Ok -- I am close to positive it is either the ignition switch or the power going to the ignition switch ... does anyone have information on how to swtich this out or where to get the parts?

wow, shocked i couldn't get any replies on this ...

It was the electrical portion of the ignition switch. I swapped it out last night and as of 30 miles later, i'm running smooth as silk so far.

aiight fleet,

i'll try to help the best i can, cause even i'm stumped on the starting and stalling problems being that my car does the same thing you mentioned. Like i said could be your main relay or electrical switch, as for the electrical switch wiich i changed last week and the next day i started the car it DIES even though after i had put it in i stalled the car and started it, all went well. Anyway the electrical switch is located on your steering column to left heres website on starting and stalling problem http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/index.html. Here's another onehttp://techauto.te.funpic.org/mainrelaydefine.php.

they should give u all the info u need, as for the main relayi think it's on the left or the right of the steering under the dasgh, not sure cause i'm looking for mine, though not looking hard enough. ONe last note if you know how to solder i'd recommend u solder the main relay if it is actually giving u problems and as for the electrical switch i'd test it first u don't wanna make the same mistake i made 42 bucks down the drain. good luck BUD.

best advice i can give ya

Safety Recall: Ignition Switch
(Supersedes 02-031, dated September 17, 2002)
BACKGROUND
Electrical contacts in the ignition switch can wear
prematurely due to high electrical current passing
through the switch. Worn out ignition contacts could
cause the engine to stall without warning. Although the
engine will restart in most cases, a vehicle that stalls
while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealer should fix it for free.

ignition recall..

...i swapped it out before i heard about the recall, $44 for the part ... but that's a good FYI to have on here for anyone who has future problems.
