Default TDC Question/Help

Ok, I got the belt off then put a screwdriver in cylinder 1 and turned the crank until the piston pushed the screwdriver all the way up, then I adjusted the cams TDC and sliped the belt back on. I try to start it, it doesnt start and backfires every two clicks or so. It does sound alot better than before, no more whining actually sounds like its close. Could I just be off a tooth or so still?

Also on the crankshaft pulley I noticed something, it has three lines, then an inch over it has one more looks like this.

____||| ______|____

What do those lines mean? when the piston is all the way up, those are on the bottom.

Dude, don't need to make a new thread every time, try using the same thread, it's still the same question.

Looks like the marks you are describing are the ignition timing marks... which... should be on the top at tdc. You sure you TDC'ed the #1 piston?

Also... i'd start getting worried about bent valves if i were you. Should make damn sure everything is right with the cam timing before trying to start it.

You've downloaded the Helm's manual right?

In my experience it will run fine 1 or 2 teeth off in either direction, just won't have any power at all... so i'd say something is up.

Well the screwdriver was all the way up in the 1st cylinder, does the piston go up twice with one rotation?

Thanks for the help and sorry for another post.

Each rotation of the crank moves the piston up and down once.

Each rotation of the crank moves the camshaft 1/2 turn. (if i'm thinking right, maybe it's twice, brain farts suck)

So... you could be 180 degrees off still.. somehow... like if you're turning it off the cam not the crank... dunno... never had that much difficulty. But i always am watching the cam for compression stroke a the same time. Try: turn the engine until you have compression on #1... nevermind won't work now if it is off. ummmm. study it and make it work.

Unless your crank or cam pulley has spun (possible, check the key way on the crank).

I have a b16, I turned the crank until the piston was all the way up, then I put the cams TDC. Everything is lined up and it wont start and it backfires, unless I am doing something wrong... The piston all the way up lines up the pully line and mark perfectly.

use the crank pulley markings and the cams marking to align TDC .... you can use a paper towel over the spark plug hole #1 and when the piston goes back up if should pop that paper out.....

damn that sucks alot. whoever did my timing when i first bought the car jacked it up. idk what was wrong but the car had no power. so a week later i had my friend help me do the timing on on d series and found out that it was off but no bent valves. we checked for compression and to my surprise it was fine :D

if you had #1 piston at TDC and the marks are on the bottom of the crank pulley, you are not at TDC on compression on #1 - you are at TDC on compression on #4 and on TDC at overlap on #1 - you are 180* out

The timing mark should be at the arrow for both 1 & 4 TDC, they move in synch.

Also who is to say he did not turn the distributor 180* out? This could have happened when he turned the camshafts. The same symptoms would occur if this was true.
