ITR VIN / Badge # database
Here-ye! Here-ye! A project underway....an ITR VIN vs Badge Number database containing ALL ITRs, not just stolen, wrecked, or otherwise stripped. The idea here is that it's easier to find this info now from current owners rather than tracking down previous owners who may or may not remember the badge #. And sadly, a mint condition ITR today could be a stripped shell tomorrow.
We're thinking perhaps a few well known and trusted folks could keep and update a PRIVATE database with ITR VINs along with the associated Badge #, color, and year. The information gathered would not be made public. If someday, someone is searching for the badge # of an ITR they just bought, they would contact one of these people with their VIN and hopefully get a match. I'd say at least 2-3 people to handle this so that the data will be backed up if something were to happen to one person's computer.
This program would be completely voluntary. I think this is the ITR community's best bet for maintaining this invaluable info for years to come, unless Honda ever releases THE LIST

Wouldn't you want database and application people to do this?
Top priority to me would not be trusted, well known or moderator, since that doesn't guarantee they'll know a good way to store all this data so its useable/searchable. i can think of 100 people I work with who think an excel spreadsheet is a 'database'.
chris - who is not volunteering, unless dave r0r wants to help me set up something on ITRCA.

andyt already has a list of all USIM ITR VINs which associates them with color and year. I believe he also has received a sampling of a small number of badge numbers associated with VINs, which he has used on occasion to estimate approximate badge numbers for any particular VIN. (I'm sure you're aware that the badge numbers were not necessarily assigned in the exact same sequence as the VINs came off the assembly line.) It's all documented in that topic that's stickied at the top of this forum (the one that I originated).

Yes, an Excel Spreadsheet
Weither its here or ITRCA or both, as long as people see the post and participate if they choose.

Yes, I know you can't determine Badge# from the VIN which is why I think this would be a good project. This way we could get a record of the EXACT badge for VINs and not an approximation.

Doespike, this is a good idea, and a ton of work
although he has me on a lead to contact a girl who I am 97% sure had my old ITR and the only thing holding me back is not having a myspace account to contact her
so if a legit person i am familiar with (ie trust giving some info out) and has a myspace account, pm me

It has already been a bit of work, but I've enjoyed it and have the desire to see this project through.
I've made pretty good progress on the 97's (I'm starting with 97 and working forward through the years, though still collecting info on the others) and I should be making a pretty good breakthrough on the majority of USDM 97s within a month or so.
Now is the best time to record this information for the ages. There are still plenty of former owners of stolen/stripped/wrecked ITRs around in the community who will be the last ones to know the definitive link between that ITR's VIN and its badge. Even if that shell isn't rebuilt, this info would eliminate that badge as a possible badge for another nekkid ITR.
For those who couldn't give a shitte about badges, no problem. I respect that. Move on to the next thread. This is simply something I wish to do and some others care about.
As for privacy, I do not give out or post sensitive information. Honestly though, a lot of this information has already been publicly published, but still, thieves/haters won't locate an R by me
At the moment, I'm backing up my information with one person only, Jim aka Walker111. He's good people, well trusted in my opinion and many many others, and also has an interest in recording badges. I'm doing this simply because if something happened to me or my home, I wouldn't want this data to be lost. A lot of this info is no longer posted online to be searched again.
If you'd like to provide your ITRs info, I'd be very appreciative as will any future owner of your caR. Ok, I'm tired of typing, more whiskey
BTW, Chris N is a ******.

Joe, the badge to VIN number thing kinda seems like doing an ITR Soduko.
Lets all help Joe out with this, I already did awhile ago. He has put a lot of time and effort into this and really cares about these cars.

So far it's been organizing the info pretty well. Something web based and more customized would probably be better, but would definitely have to be concerned about security.

Linux + MySQL = Security
It'd be nothing we'd have to do immediately... it could be done down the road, but if you'd like it done I could crack it out in between projects.
Ideally we could make it search if you punch in your VIN (treating the VIN as the private key, we wouldn't make it public data) it could tell you year, color, #.
but it won't go backwards, ya know?
Make a public view where all they can do is punch in a vin and hit submit...
then make an admin view where they can view the complete list add/modify.
Also give a form where people can submit/verify their production number (that might take some logistics to figure out how to keep integrity in that system)

Great idea! I can definitely see this evolving into something like that. At the moment, I'm still in my "initial" stage of research. I'm literally editing entries, and adding new ones daily. It's hard to say when this stage will be done....might be a year.
After that, it'll just be any new info that comes along. So yeah, at some point this project will need someone with those kinds of skillz

Um, me forgets
I think I remember him mentioning it. I have the Excel file with all the possible ITR VINs over the years....the one that calculates the check digit. Then I just cross reference with the info that Ken quoted from you in the first post of the "How many ITRs were made..." thread. It's kind of bulky and Excel always recalculates each time I open it......and runs out of memory

What would be neat if the database has the right number the user forcefully "donates" then the proceeds go to expo funds.

I don't think I would do that. You never know what could happen. Hacking or infiltrators etc. A thief or thieves would have a field day with that. With all the info along with your VIN one could tell your full name, address, and other misc. info. It's dealing with personal information too, not just a car.
IMO.
