Default Exhaust cutout, Good or Bad idea.

I am one a very limited budget, and planned on leaving my exhaust stock and just working on suspension. Come to find out the exhaust mani is welded to the cat by a long pipe, the problem is that it pipe is much smaller than the rest of the exhaust. So small they just slid it into the stock pipes and welded it up. I am assuming this is a big choke point for the exhaust. My Idea is to buy a used header, 2 or 2.35 inch col. and weld up a Cutout right after it. What do you guys think about this. All it would cost me is the price of the header($100), cable cutout($47), and welding. Should I stick to a smaller size so there is still some back pressure? The engine has no mods other than a SRI.
I know this isnt going to sound the best, but I will still have the stock exhaust + my itr muffler when I dont want it to be loud. I guess its just appealing to me to be able to have the option of haveing really quiet and then really loud exhaust.

So you are going to make something that allows you to run straight headers some times and muffler some times???

Correct. When the cutout is clost the exhaust continues through the exhaust as normal, but then opened it will dump it right out the header.

Pic from QTP.com dont plan on buying from them, I am attempting to make my own or just get one used.

It would end up looking something like this.

What would you recomend? Do you mean that they all leak in general or just QTP leaks? I would not get an electric one either, I would use a cable.

It sounds like a good idea. I make a cut out with a block off plate that bolts on though that way you don't leak as much...

Yea but then that really defeats one of my main reasons for wanting it. Its no longer "on demand" like that. I would have to jack up the car and unbolt it everytime I wanted it, and then have to bolt it back up when Im done.

I wouldn't want it on demand because i would use it on the street too much and get busted... = my .02

But if you ever did use it on the street and got busted, you have the option of turning it off, and possibly getting out of a ticket.

I had an electric one.. it didn't leak at all... I loved it...

I had the e cutout on my SRT and was romping on it pretty good. (LOUD).. turned the corner and saw a cop.. closed the cutout and cruised on by nice and stock sounding.

I want the one from ATP that is boost activated... whenever you hit boost it opens up.

DMH sells the best one, and the boost activated one is a bad idea. It will lag to much and since you want a open pipe to help w/ power and turbo lag it kinda defeats the propose. You will boost faster if the restriction is no longer there.

I have one on the way for my car. Keeping the stock exhaust system and muffler and gonna open the cutout when i wanna gain some extra hp's haha
Its cheaper then going full exhaust and keeps the car half sleeperish!

How well do these hold up? Anyone know if they leak at all? Im no welding expert so will this(cast iron) weld into the exhaust without a problem?

its not the welding causes leak, its the butterfly.

I understand that, what im asking is will cast iron weld into my stock exhaust? Iron welds to steel correct? Since there is iron in steel.

And what type of leak are we talking about? Would it be very noticable or loud?

You might actually get a better idea, or responses in the Welding/Fabrication.

The guy in this thread did some e-cutouts also, not on a teg, but it's more, or less the same.

You can weld almost any two metals together if you use the right wire!

i was thinking of doing a cut off awhile back but never really got a good enough reason to invest in a qtec system.

This is NOT a good idea. I had to have my exhaust welded to fit on my car so I was running just a header and cat on my gsr for about a week and I thought it was fast but as soon as the rest of the exhaust was hung, HUGE difference in power. I prefer full exhaust system but to each his own.

I don't think this guy is boosting. I thought on an NA motor you needed some backpressure (scavenge?) to make power and keep from hurting your exhaust valves. Just get a new pipe welded in to replace that bottleneck in your system if it bothers you so much.
