Who has done this? Is the gear on the final drive drive shaft cluster and do you have to take the other gear cluster apart as well? Is the fifth gear a matched pair of gears?

And if these things are rev limited for top end, how fast would an R go with the stock FD and a GSR 5th gear? Just a silly question..

 

Theoretically it would reach 171.2 MPH before running out of gear but, realistically it couldn't hit that without some serious power mods.

Why do you want the GSR 5th now? 158.9MPH stock or 141MPH with the 4.929 is too low of a top speed?

Yes, it's the cruzing thing... Actually I find I use 5th gear quite a lot around where I live, and not just on the highway... Lot's of long straight open road around here..
And I find the motor revs high enough in top gear now.. thankyou very much Honda...

Besides, this is my wife's car, and she says don't make it any louder... So she would notice straight away that the car was busier in 5th gear... She never hits V-TEC so she wouldn't notice the intermediate gears so much..

Still no one has answered my question about the gears... After helping Poo Face install his ATS and driving it, this is the only mod I am considering... It really rips...

But I think I will keep the stock flywheel, cause it should help slow down the wheel spin in first and second gear..

My opinion - gsr 5th is for sissies!

I've got ats and itr 1-5..... If anything, I'd like a slightly more agressive 5th.....

But if you're gonna switch 5th gear to gsr, that might not be too bad. *shrug*

Just know that when you shift to 5th, your buddy with ATS and stock itr 1-5 will walk by you with ease...

If it's any consolation, however, the jdm 98 spec trannies come with usdm 1-3, and gsr 4-5, with 4.785... So your tranny will be more agressive than that... It'll be a heck of an rpm drop from 4-5 though... And imho, do the flywheel - wheelspin in the lower gears isn't *that* bad.... This is an excellent time to put the flywheel in too.....

And Tom (b18ch-eh1234234124512345......) is near me - I thought he just had stock itr 1-5 + ATS..... I'll ask him to post up..... We did some pulls a while back that were interesting.....

 

hahaha... I was about to say: Seeya on the back streatch... It's realy not worth it, it only raises your rpm by about 500 rpm in 5th. Keep the ITR 5th, its nice having some power in 5th. I've been running the ATS now for about a month and I've noticed that I keep it in 5th alot more then I did before. Saves on gas running around town, cause the car does not bog down when u punch it and you don't have to down shift to 4th. Also I'm running the stock Flywheel and clutch right now (don't ask) but will be putting on a spoon fly and exedy next weekend

 

I am curious, why didn't you guys get the 1st gear from ATS? According to what I have read in the past ATS offers a longer 1st & it helps with traction. Was it not worth it for many of you?

 

I have the ATS with GSR 5th gear.

After I drove Mike M.'s car with the ATS and ITR 5th gear, I wish I never did the GSR gear. RPM drops pretty low from 4th to 5th upshift.

But it's nice for cruising w/ the GSR 5th. Seems to be within 100 or 200 RPM of stock ITR 5th.

 

Why spend the $, when stock 1st is fine? I've got spec b's putting down 189 at the wheels and the power is very linear so I don't get the reported "slippage" that others comment on... My guess is that many don't actually have this mod and rumors/ misinformation/ disinformation abound...

Those who have reported slippage have stock itr internals and the vtec crossover is more abrupt than mine, so maybe that's the reason.....?

I'll change to ats 1st or toda 1-2 as needed, and not before. I say to all the doubters to try it first and get some stickier tires next.

When I do we will have to roll from 120 mph to see who is faster in 5th gear

( silliest race I can think of... who cares except for that three seconds you are in 5th gear on SOME tracks...) It's not like the car will pull slower than it does now with the stock fd.. infact it should pull just the same as it does now... nothing wrong with that... for a grocery getter! )

 

Too bad you are so far away, I'd love to try it first. Do you spend time on a track ? Does the drop affect you in any of your performance driving or is it just more of a sound/feel sort of thing?

and how much extra work was the 5th gear install? Where did you get the gears?

 

I love the ATS FD with ITR 1-5......on the freeway 5th gear pulls great, no more need to downshift into 4th. It only raises you about 500 rpm in 5th. With the ATS and the Toda flywheel, 1st gear is gone a matter of a second...but with the Falken azenis I really dont get alot of wheel spin.....maybe I just dont have enough power yet (175/124)

 

The car is in my garage 90% of the time, sleeping under a car cover.
The other 10% is driving around town and messing with the little rice boys in their 1990 Civics and Integras.

The RPM drop is like 400 more than stock. For a road racer, it would make a huge difference. For me, not really. But I really like the feel of the ITR 5th.

If Mike thinks the GS-R 5th is bad, just think what the LS 5th is like! I have the 4.929 ATS with an LS 5th and it is soooo bad! I have got to get that thing out of there and put the stock 5th back.

IMO The stock 5th is fine. Get a flywheel instead. When you need the help you know who to call.

I get good traction in first with hot tires and good asphault. But who would drag with the ATS anyways?
