Default delsol body flex

has anyone fab'd something up to help stop this. Also dose sanyone know the exact weak spots. is it the floor, targa area. seems to not be nearly as bad when the tops not off. i was thinking maybe some braces connecting the front and back pillars to hold them solid all the time. or a cage with extensions to the pillars. all opinions and suggestions welcome

thanks,
postman

made this bar for a friend out of 1.5" DOM tubing, said it stiffened the chassis a lot.

is really hard to find delsol owners that care or know about body flex..

most confuse it with body roll.. and its NOT the same thing..

ive been tryin to think about a solution to the problem. or somethin to help minimize it for a while..

i know a cage would be the best ideal thing to do.. but me bein 6 feet tall its already hard enough to get in and out of the car.. imagine with a freaking cage in there..

othere options would be foam, braces, stich weld the floor, but each has its pros and cons..

foam is messy.. and i havent been able to find any products that are injected..

braces work.. but what kind of braces to make.. where to place them. wheres the weakpoint.. its really hard to think where to begin bracing.. also limited space in the cabin or under car..

stich welding takes alot of time and you have to be really careful not to mess up the whole body..

been thinking on beefing/bracing the middle tunel. right where the exhaust travels through.. but there isnt much space under there..

im probably going to be gong into this extensively in a few weeks. i might use a chassis ear to locate the weak points. will try to do a wite up on this.

chassis ear is something mainly used for air leaks in the cabin. like when old people are like when i drive down the road this weird noise starts. snap on makes them its a box with 4 or 6 clamps that you can hook up to parts of the chassis to hear for noises. i figure if i can find where the squeaks and creaks are the loudest should be closest to point of flex.

i will probably just make some braces, but i have the feeling if im going to have to make enough braces that i might as well build a cage. maybe a cage with extensions to certain parts that need it. plus i love to hug them turns in the country(no tokyo drift ****)so a cage might be a good idea in general.

Just corner slower , J/K

Make a pillar bar like the one pictured, it should help. I have seen a bunch of people "stich weld" all the rear panels on Integra's and Acccords to help body roll, not sure if that's gonna help much on you sol or not. If you want to try to do a bar this weekend let me know, I've been wanting to do one for the teg as well.

Also some strut bars may stiffen things up a bit.

Hit me up when you get in town, I have a wedding to go to on Saturday so hit me up before 2 if you can.

sumo power over here in the uk sell eg civic chassis lower braces that run DOWN the legnth of the car (one each side). unfortunatully they dont make them to fit the eg2 delsol

though im sure a set could be made to fit or a copy could be made, though if you pop your side skirts off the sol you have a nice long groove ( U shaped) that runs down the legnth of the sills. if you were brave enougth you could get 2 solid titanium or stainless bars cut to that diamiter and push them in the weld them up. if i had a scrapper here i would actully try it, but i paid £3700 for my sol over here and im not going to screw it up on a whim/test .

also to add the bmw m3 has the same problem, basicly on cornering the chassis twists due to the chassis being thin and having no support at all between the front 2 and rear 2 wheels, the s2000 counters this by having that fat heftey thick internal oem brace built into its chassis than joins all 4 corners together (i belive porsche also has a similar brace). saloon cars dont get the problem as the roof is all joined together , so chassis flex along the center of the car and twist is limited greatly.

another option could be to build a full car undertray which would provide much lower drag resistance and is braced on the top side stregnthen the chassis in a similar way.but at a guess thats as much work as making a full cage from scratch

interesting.. just look at the bar.. pretty much the same concept they use for hot rods.. ive heard about that space under the skirts. i will check it out and see what it can be done..

thanks for the input

Well for old f-bodies (firebird/camaro), they used to connect the front/rear subframes together with big fat bars. There's also the 'torque tubes' used in some muscle cars, mainly for keeping the body between the flywheel and diff from twisting. My 67 firebird also has a plate under the floor shifter, more or less like a 4-point lower tie-bar for a civic/integra. Its a convertible, and they obviously had to do something since it was one of the first uni-body convertibles.

There's also another way to brace it, you could go from somewhere near the rear shock mount to the door sill. You could have one go forward 1/2 or 1/4 into the door sill and still be easy to get out for a bigger guy. IIRC, that old 50's mercedes benz with the gull wings had very tall door sills to add reinforcement there.

The other thing would be to contact the roadrace forum guys, as they no doubt could give you some advice. Even other non-honda forums could give some general help, since there are a few targa-top vehicles.

Those bars suck don't buy them. They are over-priced and WEAK. They are made of thin aluminum and mount up on to the floor where the strength isn't needed. I installed some on a R32 skyline and they made no difference. Not to mention one came cracked already straight from Do luck.
