Which cable tranny is the best
I am getting ready to swap a b16 into my civic. I am having a hard time finding information on the cable trannys. Which is best for the b16? What is the difference between the s1, y1, ys1...?
ys1 with the optional LSD would be nice but rare and expensive...I have an S1 and I love it. Nice tight gearing. A little high revving on the highway though.

the S1 has really close gearing while the Y1 has a crappy final drive. Which means the Y1 will have higher freeway revs
anyway basically the Y1 is just not as tightly geared as the S1.
the S1 is a great trans, but once its dead.. you'll most likely have to move on like i did. and now i own a GSR YS1 trans which i just finished rebuilding. a definite plus to the USDM trannies is that they can actually be rebuilt. i actually swapped out the 5th gear for a 94 GSR gear to kill off the freeway revs a bit.

you can subtract all of the gear ratios between gears (ie 3rd minus 4th) to get an idea of how 'tight' the gear ratios are with respect to one another.
a few of these specs are courtesy of Katmans site http://tiiite.b16a.com/GearRatios.htm

most (including Katmans website), say that the J1 has similar gearing to the S1. so i listed the specs from the site. i didnt come up with those. but thanks
Well when i get my b16 i think i am going to search for a ys1. Can you find them with an lsd? How much do they cost on average? Also what does a tranny off a b16 out of a del sol or 00 civic si cost?
I run the Y1 LSD around the street,
You can always use like a 22.0 slick to play catch up with the S1
I used Nitto 555R's in 205/45R15 and the gears were just as tight, if not tighter than the S1. I checked this comparing the speed I ended up shifting at.
I just know I can find a used Y1 non LSD laying around somewhere for cheap if I need parts.

like eraser said... there is actually a JDM YS1 cable tranny that came with an optional LSD, but they are rare. and personally i think the GSR YS1 has become near as rare. i found mine luckily for $400 i think (forgot). but then i had to replace a few gears in it also b/c they were trashed so it still wasnt cheap. most salvage yards want $700+ for a GSR YS1 trans. goodluck though
i finially got my jdm ys1 with the lsd for $675, but i had to wait for months to get one in. and $675 was a great deal for one with a lsd. i would suggest riding/driving a couple of hybrid cars if you can to see what will work for you, and of course your cash flow will be a factor.
I've been wondering if there was an easy way to do this too, since the tranny stickers all say YS1 regardless of GSR or RS/LS/GS. And sometimes the tranny is separated from the motor or someone could've swapped, etc. So you don't see a B17 or see it physically come out of a 92-93 GSR.
Everything I've turned up is that the only sure way is to count the teeth on the gears or FD and figure out the ratio's.
Unless, the number on the sticker indicates production runs/codes for each of the trannies. It *might* be listed in the Helms. Can anyone with one confirm or deny this? I have one on backorder so I'm waiting to check this theory.
