Default Unhappy with 4-panel wink mirror. Suggestions?

I got on the track this weekend in an advanced school and realized how important mirrors are. Being passed constantly by GT and higher horsepower Production models was a real treat.

I also noted that my wink mirror vibrated to the point where I couldn't make out the passing vehicle untill the last minute. Everything over twenty yards behind me was blurred beyond recognition. Also, It's darker than what I would like.

I have a bunch to learn in terms of mirror work and 360 awareness, but would like to improve my cockpit with some other mirror set up.

Stock? Allview? Longacre convex? Any feedback would be appreciated!

I have a Longacre convex and I really dislike it. I can't successfully shift my focus to it. I'll admit that it doesn't have vibration problems though.

I have both a 3 and a 4 panel Wink, and one of them is going on the car. There must be some way to eliminate vibration problems - what's your mounting like?

I would think that the wink mirrors that just mount on the ends would be prone to vibration, but if it were mounted any other way that it would not be adjustable...

Catch 22 it seems.

I tried a Wink for a while and didn't like it either. Either you love 'em or you hate 'em. I finally went back to the stock rear view mirror, then installed some convex, formula car side mirrors. No more blind spots... less aero drag is just a bonus.

Hey Scott...

It's mounted on my 1-3/4 bar with two hose clamps which hold the two mounting brackets on each side of the mirror. The screw attachments are tight but the design of the mirror allows for flex and vibration to be most noticable in the middle of the mirror.

I might try some sort of "rubber band" fix to try to dampen the vibration by tying the middle of the mirror to my cage.

It's also pretty dark. It looks like dusk out the back of the car, even in bright light. I like to drive with my sunglasses on and that seems to make it worse.

Thanks for the input on the Longacre.

anyone see these in use? http://www.allviewmirror.com

I use a convex like RR98ITR does, only I like mine. All I use it for is to let me know if there's someone back there or not. It's nice because it fully eliminates the blind spot on the passenger's side, and between it and the driver's side, that's covered too.

I have a wink mirror in my E30 M3, because I prefer to have a non-curved mirror on the street where you need to be able to judge backwards distance more carefully, like when backing up and stuff. I've got it attached w/ hose clamps. No vibration problems there, and the E30 is notoriously vibration prone.

At least he's got something attached, we just need to hose clamp his foot to the brake, to remind him to stop

That Allview looks pretty cool. I love the way my Longacre gives me the wide view. I hate that it is hard to judge distance with it.

I use winks in my RX-7. It does vibrate over 80mph, but under that it's fine. It never vibrates so bad I can't tell somebody is approaching, just enough so I can't read their number.

The other solution - drive faster so you don't get passed

I use a convex mirror that clips on to the stock rearview and i use the stickon round convex ones on my side mirrors and i am pretty happy. I adjust the rearview so that I can just catch my head in the left corner and that really covers the rear and passenger sides. I tried it centered and every time I moved my head I thought that i was seeing a car moving up on me, very distracting. I tried the wink and I could not get it to work for me .

I have the stocker rearview, and use stick'um bubbles (the half circle ones, not the half-cylinder) on the side mirrors.

The stickums on the sides have the double advantage in that they help you to see exactly how far from a curb your tires are or how lined up you are in a parking spot.

My limited track experience with them made me very happy. Of course with the ITR wing on the back of the car I rarely use my main rearview as it is due to limited vis.
