Default diy gauge cluster

i'm looking to make my own gauge cluster for my 93 hatch. i don't really like the pillar clusters, and was thinking of turning my center vent in the dash into a 2 gauge cluster. i've been thinking about this for a long time and recently i saw i pic on here so i know it could be done, i just don't know how to make it exactly. if anyone knows or has an idea let me know.

thanks

might have a better cahnce in the tech fourms or something, instead of the apperance and cosmetic fourms.. sense these all just show off cars and stuff and they do it so quick and fast that all the topics get swtiched so fast.

I actually just did one. I wonder if it was my project you saw? I have the beginning pics posted and have it finished now. I'm just waiting on hosting, which should be any time now. And you'll see the complete write up. Did you see it on ubrf.org? This finished product is actually pretty ******* sweet. I'm very happy w/how it came out.

Here's a few pics of my finished product. I actually just copied the 2nd half of my writeup from the other forum I posted this in. I still do have the first half of the pics if you guys want a better idea of the entire DIY.

OK, finished update. Couple more phone pics of the process then as promised the finish product with a better camera. Bare with me, I have these images hosted from shitty *** photobucket.

These next two pics are after a decent amount of sanding after a couple light coats of primer were applied. Primer sands down soooo nicely. I probably did overkill wetsanding with 1000 grit, but whatever.

This pic is after a coat of krylon black, it actually looks really ******* good and smooth. However, this is for my race hatch, I don't care about looks. So I'm worried about how shiney it looks, and I don't want this bling in case of glare from the sun when I race. (yeah I know it sounds extreme, but every bit of comfort matters IMO) So this shine in my case is undesirable. I had to do something about it.

Well, some black primer actually served to be just the finish I was looking for. VERY matte and dull, yet looks perfect. No glare, very smooth finish. I do however wonder how well it will resist scratching and marks seeing as it's only primer, but I really don't care if it gets marked up. It looks pimp now, and I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
Here's some pics of the finished product from a few different angles.

Here's the top view. Perfect, no gaps between the gauge bezels and the dash piece. Clean.

Here's a better shot of the finish, where you can see the biggest blem in the whole project just to the right of the a/f gauge. Small dimple. Could have filled it with spot putty, but I did the priming and **** at my house, and the spot putty was at my buddies. I didn't want to wait.

Overall, for my first glass project, I'm very happy w/the results. This **** takes time, but the finished product is pimp. I think I'll do another one to fill the hole where my radio is supposed to be to mount my EGT and WB o2 box. And yeah I know I have a stupid narrow band a/f gauge that's useless. But for some reason when I went to test fit w/my defi EGT gauge AFTER I completed the project, it didn't fit. The defi guage was a touch too big so I just said expletive it and I'll put both the matching autometer gauges in that top pod (maybe sell the a/f and pick up a fuel pressure gauge) and do the other **** below it.

thats pretty cool, I would buy a better air/fuel guage such as an innovative wideband or something like that...but nice install nevertheless.

actually, the one i saw was over the dash (the centervent). but your **** is just as tight. i've always said the center dash one was a good place for gauges. i never thought about where you put them. thats damn good work! please put some pics & diy instructions. i am pretty handy with tools, but for some reason i dont know how, where, or with what to start this off with.

thanks man!
hope to hear from you soon!

OK, i'm going to get some grub now, but I'll post up the first half of the write up in a little while. Also, about the a/f guage, if you reread my post you'll see I already have a wideband. The narrow band gauge wasn't supposed to even go in my car but my defi EGT gauge for some reason doesn't fit. I'm a moron sometimes and don't test fit everything. I could have grinded it out, but it was all done and painted and I didn't want to touch it.

The first half of the wirteup that i'll post is much more descriptive on the DIY part. The painting and **** I didn't talk about too much, but that's kinda the easy part I guess.

OK, I know this is out of order, but here is the first half of the writeup I posted on another forum. This gives you a basic idea of how to do it. It's actually all pretty simple. Just a lot of time to sand everything to get a good finished product. Also, as someone mentioned before, that I should get a pic of it in the car.....Will do very soon. My race hatch is in storage right now, but I'm going to visit it soon to grab more dash pieces for my EGT and Wideband displays. OK, here is the first half of the writeup which is a little more detailed than the second half which is mainly finished product pics. If you have any ?'s about this ****, feel free to ask, and hopefully I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge. Remember, I'm pretty new to this too. In conclusion to everything........Don't be a *****, try it. It's actually pretty easy. Just be sure to take your time with it. You can't rush.

Dilemma: It's winter, I have some spare time, and can't really work on my car cuz it's not stored at my house. Also, my gauges pretty much just layed in the dash of my race hatch cuz I don't give a expletive about looks with that car. They were all over the place and I needed to do something about it. I've never glassed before, so my buddy helped me out. I gotta say, this **** is easy but time consuming for a good finished product. It's still in the works, but I have some pics of what we accomplished in a couple of hours/beers however you wanna gauge time.

Bare with me, these are ghetto camera phone pics, so the quality blows. The finished product will be taken with a good camera.

This was the first step. We cut a tomato paste can in half so we had a nice snug fit to drop the gauges (yes, these cans are perfect size). We then hot glued it to the angle we saw fit.

Now for the other one. This is taken from the backside of the bezel.

next we strectched a shirt to overlay the cans to form the mold we wanted and tacked it in place with hot glue. This will give us the form we need when we add resin.

What it looks like from the backside.

This pic was taken as we were adding the resin and laying fiberglass mat. I don't know too much about this **** but apparently the mat is much better to work with than the cloth **** that places sell. It looks messy but it'll all clean up.

Letting the first coat of resin and mat dry up.

This is after we added a second coat. still looks messy, dremel is our friend later.

This pic is after about 10 mins with a dremel. You can definately see some spots where the hot glue was that still need to be drilled out and have some more resin put in, but it's taking form.

Last pic I have for the night. Grabbed a random gauge laying around to test fit. Very nice, not bad for a few hours work. Still needs a lot of sanding and body filler then some spot putty. After that the paint will go on. I'll keep this updated, should be done before the end of the week if I can get to it.

Cliff notes: never worked w/glass, but it's pretty easy. Like how it's coming along so far. Look at the pictures. Pics of final product will be up soon enough.

I'm actually thinking about it.....Just pick up a used one from a junkyard, make another, then have someone send me money plus their bezel. If I did do this, I probably wouldn't do the paintwork though. Just a good coat of primer wetsanded like a ****, then it's up to you what you want to paint it. I'd prolly make these for people for a touch under a hundo if someone really wanted. It was seriously about 10 - 15 hours of work for this. I'm sure I could prolly do it faster, but I'm new at it. My buddy does want to get into doing **** like this for people to make a little extra loot on the side to pay for other projects. I dunno, pm me then I guess if you want one. (Note to Moderators: I'm not trying to advertise on here.....yet...please go easy on moderating as I don't know your advertising policy, shoot me a pm) If you did do this, I would reccomend doing one of two things. First being the easiest. Buy a can of tomato paste and cut it in half and see if your gauges fit (I wouldn't want any fitment complaints). If they do, great. If not, send me the gauges and I'll make a mold that will fit. Secondly, send me the gauges from the start, and I can do it that way too.
