Default The R is home. Impressions of the K20A

Well the R is finally home. It has been a long time but it was worth the wait. The car feels amazing and the install is flawless.

I came to my friends at http://www.fsmoto.com and told them I wanted a K20A Type R motor with fully functioning PS, A/C, SRS, ABS, etc. After some research and some enginuity they got it all together. (A/C will be fully functional by spring). They spent alot of time making custom brackets and such to make everything flawless (HID Ballast brackets, PS brackets, TB brackets, Rad brackets, FPR bracket) Also alot of wire tucking was done. I can't say enough good things about First State Motorsports. Dan and Josh made this car better than it ever was Turbo. So here are some of my intial impressions so far:

Pros:
-More Torque than a stock B (IVTEC is great. very different and more linear than Vtec from a B)
-Balance of the car feels great
-Throttle response is amazing
-Engine runs cooler from having the header in the back
-6spd tranny leaves for some better daily driving (3800rpms @ 80mph)
-acceleration is very quick
-LSD is strong around the turns

Cons:
-Very expensive swap
-Any motor mounts you can get for this swap are stiff and cause shaking in the cabin
-Alot of modifications have to be done to fit the motor/ accessories in the car
-Custom A/C lines have to be made to run A/C
-Everything for the RSX motors are more expensive than the B series
-Thieves are going to start wanting RSX motors

Overall if you have a great shop do the swap or you do it yourself and take the time to do the research, the swap can turn out great. I am having a blast driving the car and I look forward to seeing the car at an HPDE event this year

Your car always amazes me with cleanliness.
Nice **** you got there Nate.
They look soo funny when you put an intake on them. You gain soooooo much more room.

Congrats on your getting your back and for it looking so clean and sexy. Enjoy her and keep her safe. I would hate to see that car end up in the wrong place. Your car looks amazing.

Thanks Pete. Ya its clean for now but if I start driving it everyday it will get dirty. Ya it is funny how much room is on that side when you dont have the crappy OEM intake hogging all the room

That intake just doesn't look like it would flow well. It just seems that it goes straight into a 90 degree bend, not a nice staright flow.

In the UK alot of them have just a 5" straight extension off of the intake with the filter on the end, have you looked into this?

The intake was made from a DA CAI and goes straight to the splash guard. This seems to work better at getting colder air than having a straight pipe to the fender. Only dyno tests can prove this. I am hoping to get some baseline runs in very soon.

Any shots or measurements of the oil pan clearance?

And how do you plan on passing inspection now?

Yes I am lowering the front a little more this weekend. There is about 5 1/2in of clearance right now.

Its good to see more and more k swaps into ITR's.

to the fools from a few months back who argued k series would never be what b series was... I think in time it will be the other way around.

I will PM you a price but I do not want to disclose what I have invested.

I sold my Turbo setup and Motor Swap all together and it help pay for this swap.

Reasons I did the swap:

1. Everyone has a turbo now adays and I wanted to be different
2. I want to daily drive the R again and I couldn't see myself doing that with the turbo setup. Although it was reliable as a turbo setup can be. Nothing beats a stock motor for reliability.
3. I was used to driving with 295whp everyday and did not want to go back to a stock R motor making 165-170whp. I needed a little extra power.
4. I would like to do some HPDE events and since I am such a novice I wanted to work with an N/A motor first.
5. I wanted the good midrange torque and peaky top end power all linear from the time I mash the gas.

We all know how much the parts cost to do, but how much was the labor charged and fabrication?
That and all the fabrication is probably what cost the most anyways
A lot of people that have k swaps don't have the functionality of PS, AC, and all the other things you have.

Labor and Fabrication is around $1500-2500 depending on who you go to.

Looks nice!

Forgive my ignorance, but... briefly, what's the difference between the JDM RSX-R motor used here, and the USM RSX-S motor? Not looking for a big technical description, just a 50 words or less kind of thing, and maybe nominal hp/torque figures (not dyno, just stated)... TIA
