Default Steering wheel quick release

Is anyone running a ball bearing style quick release in there honda road course car?
What is the scca or sfi legality of these?
I am looking at ones similar to these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1

How far do these actually extend the wheel closer to you as i have very short legs and don't want to compromise my seating

I have one of those and its a piece of **** - I took it off the car. It became harder and harder to pull off, it would stick and when it was on it developed a lot of play

I bought a NRG one kind of like the one in the link. I absolutely love it. No play, and its very easy to get on and off. Paid a little more than that one, but you get what you pay for most of the time.

The play isnt left-to-right as with most hex style QR's, its fore-aft. I replaced it with a spacer - if i ever go with another QR, it will be the Sparco unit ($$$ )

Thanks i was looking at the nrg ones the ebay one was the easiest pic i could find.
OK now how far does it move the steering wheel closer to you?
Is it a legal QR?
The sparco $$$ one is SFI approved. Is this style at least DOT approved?

It moves the steering wheel 2". Approval = no idea.... DOT doesnt issue approvals for steering QR's.

FET makes a locking type quick release spacer, which has been used in some Japanese track cars for up to 5 years without play.

It comes with a OEM coated finish to match the Hub assembly.
MSRP: 127$

I use the Smart Products quick release with a splined shaft. It has very little play and is nicely machined. Overall, the unit is very well made. It is heavier than the Sparco unit but is less expensive at $220. So if you're looking for a quality quick release, look no further than the Smart Products unit.

LTB Motorsports sells one for $99. I haven't used it, but since LTB is a roadracer... I figure their products are probably pretty good, and their service has been nothing but exceptional.

I've got a Tekniq steering wheel and quick release. Love it. No play whatsoever. Only one way to put the wheel back on. Locking (with a barrel lock). Nice pieces . . . both steering wheel and quick release.

I have the Sparco unit. VERY well built, and absolutely no play. Extends out the wheel by about 1/2". Works perfectly with my MOMO hub and wheel.

autotecknique (sp?) is a piece of junk!
the NRG is a quality piece and no one has said anything about it on any track i have been to

it moves the wheel about 1.5" closer but you can get a short hub to help with that

there is no play in the NRG unit

Ok the axis i think looks flimsy in the pic. I hate this cause i can't play with them and touch em and decide
The LTB is no good for me because it moves the wheel closer to me by 3" i have short little legs and sit close already
The smart racing one is tough to see
The sparco one is nice but $$$
I am still leaning towars the techniQ one beause it is SFI approved and has local support as they are out of edmonton alberta canada and i am in calgary.

Thanks for everyone's input hope this thread helps others too. i couldn't find alot of info before i started this thread

I have an NRG..
I didn't buy it for road racing though, I bought it for security purposes for my car.
(Although, I do go do the occasional "mountain pass" runs every few weeks.
But at least I'm not making a dumb thread about it)

It has no play, only up and down play (what somebody called "fore and aft" play i guess)

They usually go for around $80.

It's been about 5 months i've had it, and there still is no play.

I have the Sparco unit, and altough it is $$$, it's still absolutely slop free after beeing used for a while. It does need a bit of grease from time to time to slide on and off nicely but other than that it's perfect. It extends the steering wheel 2,5" btw.

are there any QR setups that don't bring the steering wheel closer to you? I have long arms...

What we did was remove the steering wheel "bung" from the stock steering wheel, cleaned it up on a lathe, welded some mild steel tubing onto the bung, then welded the QR bung onto the other end of the tubing. This allows us to position the steering wheel anywhere we wanted. It's actually a tad too far away, so we'll make another one this winter that moves the wheel a little closer.

The key is to find a QR with a hollow bung. That way, you can either insert a bolt though the bung (the Longacre QRs are large enough for this), or in my case, insert a long hex driver through the hole. The hole in the QR bung is too small for a bolt or socket to pass through, so we sourced a socket cap bolt (M10x1.25) with an 8mm head. To tighten or loosen the bolt, a long 8mm hex key is used. It works perfectly, and no slop from the RaceTech piece.

You can barely see the RaceTech QR here, but you can see the tubing that was welded onto the stock "bung."

Interesting idea do you have any closer pics. I hadn't thought of masaccering the stock wheel removing the centre piece and putting it on the lathe. I have a similar weld style release that came with the car however it was welded crooked i may have to try and see if i can do something similar to what you have done with the parts i already have as a trial run.
