am i getting suckered on the price of install?
hey guys. FedEx finally delivered my I/H/E this weekend. AEM short ram intake, Greddy SS 4-2-1 headers, Greddy Evo SS catback exhaust system, and stock replacement catalytic converter. My girlfriend wants to pay to get it installed as an early christmas present so i went and got a quote to install it all about 10 minutes ago. The shop does all my mechanical work but doesnt usually do any modification service. Everything is bolt on though so he quoted me about $125. I know, i know, i could do it all myself and save the money but its not coming out of my pocket and besides, i dont have a lift to get the car up in the air. and if something goes wrong, they are insured. is that price too high or will it be worth it to let the professionals do it?
Considing that the prevailing Labor Rate in most shops now crowds $50.00/hr, He's cheap if you do the math. Even at $40.00/hr, that comes out to three (3) hours. I think it's reasonable

wow what a good girlfriend, but save you money or hers, and DIY its easy the most easy thing to do is to put on you intake, then your h/e should be really easy also but you need tools and a dry place to do it, i did all that **** in under an 45mins. i know warrentys are nice, but think about it, do it your self and know how to do it, or have some one else do it and not know how to do it when somthing ***** up,,,, your choice. you said your girlfriend was going to pay for it well then ok go get it done but you should still put on your intake its sooooo easy
if you dont know how just ask

yeah i think i will install the intake myself. i was reading the instruction sheet for the short ram intake and it said something about draining a gallon of coolant before installing the intake. i dont understand why i would need to do that. it seems as simple as disconnecting the hoses and taking out the filterbox and plastic intake and then putting in the new intake. is the coolant draining really needed?
no you dont need to drain a damn thing
just take out the old **** and put in the new, its to easy
did you call any exhaust shops and see how much they would charge?

yeah i know how everything works, i took everything out of the boxes, laid it out and mocked it up to make sure everything is going to fit right. I easily think i could get it done by myself but i'm leary about messing with the headers. and as i said before, i dont have a lift to get the car up in the air like i would want to. i do appreciate the advice though. i would love to do most of the work myself, get my hands dirty and learn how to do it, but i generally understand how its done and am already quite confident that i could do it. so just how easy is it to install the intake?

and its so easy that if you did need to expletive with it because your warranty did not cover it, it would be easy,, yeah on second thought go get it done save your self the pain

if you want do to it PROPERLY and not spill coolant yes you have to drain coolant out. most intakes for the 5g accord will come with a small coolant hose to by pass the stock metal pipe which will no longer be used.

so now im confused about the water bypass coolant hose thing. i didnt even know about that. so if i bypass it, then what......im confused. the intake only has one little outlet tig-welded to it but the kit came with two lengths of rubber hose. doesnt one of the hoses go to your pcv valve or something like that? what is the other one for?

all 5g accords have that metal coolant pipe thing, it loops around i think from the theromostat to the throttle body or soemthing, i forget i haven't seen one in like 6yrs, haha.
its welded to the pipe that connectse between the stock intake arm and the breather port on the valve cover. ideally you would remove that pipe and replace it with a hose, but most ppl just overlook it and push it out of the way and call it a day.

Sounds very fair to me. Most shops around here charge $60-$100/hr so that seems good to me. Infact, i might even concider taking my car to a shop for that price and that much work. Headers can be a bitch on an older car.
anyone installed greddy headers or an Evo system before? Greddy, to my knowledge, is a very good and trustworthy company, right? im worried about it all fitting right. i mocked it up and it seems ok but im leary. the mechanic said as long as everything was bolt up and they didnt have to modify it any, that he would install it. So i did good going with Greddy right?
im not trying to be an ***, but if your not confident about installing the intake, which is the simplest of the three, i wouldnt try to install the H/E myself if i were you. 125 is a very fair price for all three. go ahead and do it.
the car goes in the shop tomorrow morning. i cant remember if the quote included installing the intake or not but my cousin said he would help me put it on this weekend. thanks for all the advice guys.
oh yeah. i got all new gaskets but i didnt get new bolts and springs for the exhaust. i should be ok using the old ones right? thanks again

I know its already been said, but your getting a good price compared to the shops in my area, especially with headers. As for those intake hoses, i didn't thinkt here was any coolent runing through them, i just thought they were for some sort of air sensor. When i installed mine, i plugged off one of them, and the other two hooked onto a T fitting which in turn hooked onto the intake.

Here's a free "car lift"......drive one side of the vehicle onto a raised curb and leave the other side on the street. Bam. Instant car lift. If you plan on modding your car, you should get a set of tools, floor jack and some jack stands. It'll save you LOTS of money plus you'll be learning how to work on your own cars. Good luck with whatever you choose.......
