My roommates cousin was driving back to his house last night in SJ when he was pulled over by Santa Clara County Sherif, and givin a ticket for his JDM front end... It states that he recived the ticket for not having DOT aproved headlights. On top of the the officer gave him a State Ref. ticket for:
-Too low
-AEM Intake (with carb. #)
-Comptech Header (Street legal??)
-Modified exhaust pipe
On top of this he just got his car back last week, cause some lady ran a red light and hit his front end.. Damn man this sucks...
Now he doesnt even know what to do...

thats normal. Damn he got off easy. How about 5 cop cars and two back up police navigator trucks pulling you over for nothing. They checked my whole car and named every aftermarket item I had. And yes they did know all about the JDM stuff and Jap. parts like Top Fuel, C Westin, etc... They let me off easy because I didn't fight them and I was very helpful in showing them my car. Plus one of the cops wanted a ride in it! lol Anyway I was written up for the headlights, exhaust, etc... and a trip to the smog ref. I passed and everything is ok now, plus I get a cool carb ref decal on my car now showing that the car is "legal"
Anyway the ticket for the headlights is like a $220 fine or so. I forget the exact amount.
I just becareful now. Well I don't drive the car that much, but whem I do I keep my parking lights always on to emit orange on the side corners so that it looks more legal. Plus when ever I see and cop, I turn my blinker on so that he see's that I don't have any superwhites, etc... Basically just try to blend in as much as possible and try to make it look legal, clean, and stock as possible.

Wait a minute! The JDM Front end is Illegal here in the states!!? wtf? I'm savin up for it and now I find out i can get a ticket for it? Damn Cops suck! And i live near San Jose also...
yes the front is illegal. Not only are the headlights not DOT approved, the front has no front support/impact bar which is VERY illegal (yes they checked to see if had one).
Well, if you go for the Mugen front bumper, you be less illegal (if there is such a thing) since the stock USDM impact bar can be left alone, and there is enough clearance for it. Only a matter of time before the Canadian RCMP gets smart about the lights

I would have to agreeAt one time I had a Tanabe RM - I would always get pulled over and they would say its for the exhaust. Now I have a Spoon N1, Not as noticeable it blends right in (Small tip sits under the bumper) Even though its louder I never get pulled over for it.
I had Clear sidemarkers and PIAA Bulbs in the turn signals I would get pulled over for it. I put the OEM amber sidemarkers in and Amber bulbs and again It blends in And I haven't had a problem.
The key is blending in.
You could have a car with all legal parts on it, But they attract alot of attention IE Big Tipped exhaust, decals, rims etc. And that guy will get harrassed plenty of times.
Then you could have a car that "Looks" stock yet is illegal and he will probably be harassed 1/5th of the amount of times as the other guy.
i have a question for you jdm owners. For the turn signal in the headlight, how do u replace the bulb? would u need to remove the entire assembly to get access to it?
He pulled him over cause he said the car was too loud. Said he heard it from more than 60 feet away
thanks Mike.
Also Austin your correct. However he its 50ft not 60ft!
However I do think if you can hear the car from more then 50ft, its kinda obvious that its over the db limit of 107bds. To give an example, most E36 M3's have a hard time passing the db test with a fully stock car!!!!!!! Thats lame IMO!!! Why? Look at the Ferrari 550, etc... those cars are really really loud. Also the new GT2 is even more louder then the 550!!!! WTF, how do they pass and we dont. Oh yeah stock Vipers also don't pass the db limit. I know a viper owner who got db tested by and cop and didn't pass, he ended up having to fight the ticket which took like 3 months to just prove that the car is stock and that the rule is fu@ked up.

its 12:45 shouldnt you be in school anyway? If not, get yo azz over to the store!!
They probably pass because they come like that.
A lot of the laws have stipulations that state "if not equipped from the mfg"
A lot of the laws have stipulations that state "if not equipped from the mfg"
it states that no vehicle can have an exhaust system that exceeds X dB while blah, blah, blah.
