Default Engine problem, grinding noise.

Engine is ~100K mile old. 1998 year. H22A5(Europe) similar like H22A4.

Engine have the grinding noise at 4 and 3 cylinder, seems like sound coming somewhere from head.

First inspection.
Low cam rocker arms and camshafts have unusual wear out. So we change them.
The timing belt hydro tensioner was broken too(I couldn't screw it up and fix it), but timing belt was in right place.
LMA's are good too.

Uninstall the mine bearing holder, and open rods, all bearings like new.

So, now we taking head off.....

Unusual problem for H22A engine never seen problems like that, any help appreciate.

After removing the cylinder head everything become clear. The 4 piston was somehow overheated. Surface of the piston under the oil ring was damaged. Of course the Nicasil sleeve is gone too. I guess it's because of wrong oil.

Good reason to build NA engine. Going to sleeve the block and put some high compression pistons.

This in your 3rd gen?

What is Nicasil?

I don't see how the wrong kind of oil could cause a piston to overheat. Perhaps, you had a ring land failure or something? Take pictures.

No, it's in 4gen lude. Maybe it's written in English different. The "Nicasil" is coat on H series cylinder walls, there are no iron sleeves.

Try to do some pics.

All 4 cylinder was overheated. The piston and exhaust valves have burn(lean) signs, need to change them. As the valves was overheated, the low cam rocker arms in 4 cylinder are melted too. We will check the valve guides too.

Usually exhaust valves have light brown color, this head have more like gray color valves. Big sign of lean mixture. Why such damage on stock, no modification engine?

Here are the pics:

Those are JEPistons in CP box.
