Installing side mount race seats .. how creative do I need to be?
I'm trying to install these Sparco Evo2 seats, no sliders, just side-mounts. I have one pair of the normal steel mounts, and a pair of the fancy aluminum ones with more adjustability.
(Sparco Evo2/EvoL, http://www.tankslapperautosport.com/ $976.95 shipped for a pair. Good deal!)
Underneath the stock seat on my ITR is a raised ridge (maybe 1 or 1.5 inches high) where the front of the seats bolted, and in the rear there is, on one side, a raised ridge for the outside rear mount. The inside rear bolt mounting point is flush with the floor.
So, err, I temporarily put the mounts on, and the front lip of the seat catches on the front ridge, and the bucket of the seat in the rear doesn't clear the raised bump on the outside either.
Should I cut all these raised bits on the floor down, and mount straight to the floor? That looks like my best option. Putting the stock seats back in will be a PITA, but oh well?
I have a dozen of the 2" washers I used for mounting the harnesses from ioport, can I just use those to back the bolts on the floor, or do I need something more substantial? I'd rather the seats don't rip out of the floor, but I guess if they're good enough for harnesses, they should be good enough for a seat?

I'm not sure if I missed something, like if you wanted to mount the seat as low as possible, but I would just buy a set of brackets (~75-150) that is made for the DC chasis and bolts right into the stock locations, and then the sidemount bolts right to that. You could also put sliders in between the two if you want adjustability.

Yeah, I did... I'm 6'4 or so, the stock seat was really too high, I'd like this thing to be on the floor.
I may keep the front rail, and just cut out the rear. I can fab something to get the stock seat rail back, if I need to. The side mount rails would be at an angle, but that's reasonable.

Why not get something like this and drill the holes into the top where you need, then bolt the sidemounts on. It would add 3/4 an inch to your seat height tops and you wouldnt have to destroy your car in the process

Chris, try something like this:

I'm 6'2" and have LOTS of headroom. That sits about as low as I could possibly go with an eyebolt for the subbelts, and required no cutting of those rails.

Yep, I'm sure glad I did. Saved me from a huge number of headaches.

Here's mine. Since the mounts on the seat are so far forward, I had the cage builder weld in two cross bars for the seat mount brackets. When I had a Sparco EVO2, I just cut and welded some 0.125 mild steel to make two brackets that bolted to the stock seat rail mounting points. I bolted a set of OMP aluminum side mount brakets these fabricated brackets. Both methods worked just fine, but the current mounting scheme is lighter (for whatever that's worth).

Having the two bars welded into the body did allow for easier installation of the seat, plus we were able to move the seat more inward than with the other brackets. It's not a Kirkey seat, but the Kirkey brackets worked like a charm.

I thought 117 had been sneakin' around our shop, taking pics of my car.
There are two pairs of left-side bracket mount holes to accommodate seats of different widths - Recaro Racer SPG and Pole Position.
On the new tub, we are going to take advantage of the rule that allows stock mounting bits to be removed to facilitate installation of new brackets, cut out that pokey thing in the middle of the transverse chassis element, whiz off the ratchety side rails, and put in similar cross mounts about an inch lower.

if you need it done, my brother or i can fab anything up you need, and we're cheaper and just as good as about anyone in chicago. pm me if interested, and yes, i have lots of references....haha
Knestis, you were the inspiration for the mounts.
My cage builder has done them before on many AI cars, but I actually went to him with the idea (which I got from looking at pictures you posted). Thanks!

chris, you should have taken a look at my seat at wgi. mine realy is on the floor. my sideplates are notched to fit over the stock mounting humps in teh floor. then i bolted it right tot he floor pan with backing plates underneeth. some will say its a good way, some will say to get somehting welded in to mount the seat to.

I know, I should have taken a closer look! Oh well, I wasn't planning ahead enough
I'm not nearly as tall as you, but I'll probably end up doing something similar.
