Never seen them made for a Honda. I've seen them used on older Chevy/Ford V8's.

EDIT: Can you determine how much camshaft advance/retard you can run with large cams/high compression pistons?

thanks dave! (appreciate all your help in the past btw. managed to hit 41 MPG in an 89 civic sedan, leaned out in the cruise cells to 16-18:1 and no knock on 87 octane 10:1 compression. i attribute it to flat pistons and tight quench more than tuning skills. i still suck.)

-92typeR-
thats a really good question. i made them more for determining the crank position of opening and closing events and the actual lift profile taken from the valve retainer.

i guess the fastest way to check your cam gear range using my device would be to use some soft dummy springs in place of your valve springs on an otherwise assembled engine. then set your gears wherever you want and depress the valve while watching the indicator to determine how much travel was left in the valve before contacting the piston. dont forgot to account for rodstretch and piston slap with RPM.

also youd wanna know valve to valve clearance IMO. pull the head, lay it sideways on a bench and stretch an old timing belt around the two cam gears. clamp it into a loop around the gears using vice grips and rotate the 2 cams. vary your camgears to extremes in every combination and measure valve to valve clearance with a feeler gauge, recording your results. its just a guess, but i would think .030" is getting pretty close.

perhaps there is a better way but thats all i could think of. hope it helped.

Actually Larry has the long throw indicators which would be nicer, but in no way cost effective. I originally came up with the idea of having these made when I did in fact see the Endyn setup.

Mike points all this out on his site though..

I actually gave Mike the idea for the coolant adaptor for doing hot hone jobs on engine blocks as well.

Trust me guys , if you need something just hit Mike up , chances are if it isnt made he can develop and make it for you..
I have been involved with the development of the cam degree center and love the progress thats been made with each revision.

If you guys change alot of valve springs in cyl heads make sure you hit up mike for his valve spring compressor installation center.. This thing is awesome..

yep. thats where the idea came from and i give Larry full credit for that. i got written permission from him about a year ago for these, and josh (at endyn) referred a customer to me from panama whod called them for a set. we did that transaction and he was very happy last time we spoke. im certainly very grateful for endyn's generosity in this matter.

Thanks tom, much appreciated. im unsure how long the stroke is on larry's indicators. mine are 2" on the valves and 1" on the piston but there are extension rods from 0-22 inches so one can certainly plot piston travel to BDC if they really wanted to.

a 5" starrett indicator cost $352 from MSC so it wasnt economical IMO.

worthy update-

greg samaroo is gonna loan me F20C and K series heads next weekend (thanks greg!) so if all goes well they will be added to this lineup. i might get to check against a ZC today (which i think theyll fit already.)

after that, once i find H23 they will fit every DOHC honda/acura 4 cylinder that i could think of.

flow bench fixtures for those are next. im half way with them.

it slides back and forth on the rods very easily. locate the cup over the spring, pull down on the handle, put the pin in there and youve got 2 hands free to deal with the keepers. its nice for installation because the valve stem is vertical and gravity helps out. the tray adjusts for 0-45 degrees valve included angle and the head adjusts for head height and width. has no trouble compressing a race spring.

and no, the lever is not a handlebar, i made it in my tubing bender.

I am so impressed with the valvespring installation center (The "VIC" )

This is after we struggled with a snap-on fixture and excercised a number of expletives when the keepers got lost in oblivion etc...etc....

How much for something so brilliant??
