Default code 22 vtec pressure valve

Thanks to this forum my build has been pretty successful, I have been driving to work the past 2 weeks and taking nightly romps through the twisties in the foothills. however every few days i'll need to add oil after throwing a CEL, which turns out to be code 22. Once I add oil and reset the ecu, I'm good again for a few days.

the first 4 years i owned the Si, when it was stock, throughout 172000 miles I never threw a code, and let me tell you vtec was engaged very often. i used regular 5w30 pennzoil the whole time.

what can I look into to try to eliminate this problem? could i be burning too much oil? i changed the non-detergent oil after about 50 miles and put in more non-detergent oil. i have about 900 miles on the motor now. would the vtec system react poorly to the nd-30 ? I suppose I can put the regular stuff in now...but i wonder if i'm having some other issues. i'm not sure where to start so any suggestions are appreciated.

oh i guess it would help if you knew the setup

2000 si, ctr pistons, ctr cams, pnp head, itr valvetrain, aem cai, maxbore'd tb, blox IM, dc 4:1 2.5", rc310s, b&m fpr, p28, crome, edm p30 basemap adjusted for 330cc injectors.

you have been using ND-30 for 900 miles??

...your suppose to use that **** for about 20miles then drain and add regular oil...

im not saying that it will cure your problem, im just mentioning how long your suppose to use that oil to break in rings...

After about 20miles your rings are broken in, so that oil is just prematurly wearing your engine down....

Sounds like you have other issues goin on with your engine.

i think you are right - i just changed the oil. i always use honda filters. however when i stocked up during the build, honda sent me the new small filters. no big deal. well when i went to change the oil, the filter did not pour out oil when i pulled it. the filter was heaver than the new one, indicating it soaked up oil, but no oil poured or dripped out. wtf. brand new itr oil pump....new oil pickup....what should i look into?

dammit i just went for a drive and threw CEL code 22 again.

ok so after i changed my oil and tranny fluid (oh yeah everyone should own a set of magnetic drain plugs) i then replaced my iac valve and set the timing. it was actually way advanced and running strong but i set it to 16 and it sounded kinda rough so i bumped it to like 17-18ish. i then warmed it up for days to top off the coolant. then i chill for a few hours and check the oil before hitting the foothills. oil level is great. i hit the road and immediately notice i need to advance the timing again - it felt smooth, but almost resistant/weak compared to when the timing was more advanced. anyway i wasnt rough but i did make a few brisk accelarations around some curves and about the 3rd time vtec engaged the CEL came on again. i limped home and sure enough code 22. oil kinda low. i just put in another 1/3 quart of oil. so that's like 4.7 quarts since i drained it this afternoon.

since the itr oil pump and b16 oil pickup thingy are new, and the vtec solenoid is not, should i replace that? or might i have other issues? could i be burning oil?? how would i check that?

your vtec solenoid may a have plugged screen take all the 10mm bolts should be three oil will come out a little pull the screen out and clean with break cleaner put back in. try that if that doesnt work invest i apex-i vafc the vtec controller eliminates the pressure swtich to the ecu and vtec works all the time. the other thing to think about is you car may have slight blow buy. with a slighty higher compression crankcase pressure or blow buy escapes through the exhast system burining more oil than normal. if thats the problem recommend a oil catch can kit

it must be burning oil

I'm sure you've checked for smoke on acceleration/deceleration?

whats your compression like? Not that it has to do anything with oil burning, just curious.

if u never want to have this problem.

splice the vtec pressure switch into the solenoid wire.

it could be a pressure switch.

this is what i did to mine. 00 solenoid doesnt have a pressure switch.

i'm going to troubleshoot the pressure switch. i'll pick up an oil pressure tester and a new vtec screen too. i did replace it for the build, but perhaps there were metal shavings from the build all caught up in there....

yeah serious?? Do you think a code 22 could be because of a dented up oil pan??

i am curious on how to fix a code 22 as well. i just checked my STOCK 1999 GS-R today and it is throwing a code 90 and a 22. the thing about my car is... i have always been getting a code 90 and that has not been a problem to the car's driveability yet. however, ever since code 22 came on, i can not rev pass 5000 rpm anymore. i would downshift into 4th on the freeway and accelerate, once it hits 5k, it shuts down. it feels like the fuel pump just turns off on its own. it happens at every gear so i do not think i have a transmission problem. the car also seems to be running richer than it used to.

things about my car and how i drive:
- been a long while since i changed motor oil ( i use mobil1 5w-30 synthetic)
- about 40k on the motor
- frequently hitting vtec daily driving, but rarely pass 7k
- have oil catch can
- heel-to-toe downshift daily
- installed a fuel cut switch 2.5 years ago (maybe that is failing?)
- never changed fuel filter (need to do that soon. should i go OEM?)
- recently seafoamed the car and changed from NKG Vpower spark plugs to NKG platinum spark plugs

i want to ask, what is a vtec screen and where exactly is the vtec solenoid?

whoa i forgot about this post lol. so my code 22 was because i didn't have enough oil because i kept losing it through all the valve seals. shortly after i first posted this thread i spun the crank pulley woodruff key and so i yanked the motor and finally got around to doing a crank swap and at the same time i rebuilt the head. the car feels great now thanks to the help of this forum.

tekstyle - definitely change your fuel filter and you may as well pull off the vtec solenoid and make sure the the screens are clean. i'd post a pic of where and how but my batteries to the cam are dead again and i'm hella sick right now...i dont know about the code 90 but it sounds like you need to do a tune up and also maybe your catalytic converter is clogged...
