Whats going on with my timing? Please help!
Well yesterday I swapped in my Z6 that I had. I did all the maintenance stuff and even rebuilt the intake manny. Anyways, I checked the timing today and it's off. I installed the timing belt all at TDC. The crank cause the sprocket dot was pointing at the oil pump arrow. Then I put the cam sprocket to TDC by having the up pointing up and having the line towards the bottom (for the D16Z6 TDC) pointing at the plastic marker that is close to the bottom. So I know that was at TDC. The belt tension was set by moving it 3 teeth over to the water pump side to get proper tension. I moved the dizzy all the way advanced and it still is about half an inch off from where it should be. The timing right no is retarded as the mark is towards the front of the car. I took it on some steep hills and drove it hard and it never once pinged. I just don't get what is going on. If it was truly that far of wouldn't it ping a lot or have the valves hit the pistons?. I remember when my B7 was off and it pinged like none other and it was so load that I could hear it with the windows up and stereo on. It idles quite nice for the most part and doesn't shake or anything. Should I be worried or should I just keep checking to see if it pings. I just find it very odd that it is that far off and doesn't even ping. Oh the spark plug wires are pretty old; would this cause the timing light to blink different or irregularly?
Please help!!
Please help!!
Can anyone please help me? I just don't know what I should do
. I just don't want to discover bent valves or something fucked up because the ignition timing is reading wrong. I just don't get why it's that far off yet I did not hear a ping or anything. I will try and get a friend to come with and listen too. Some times it's hard to hear the engine over the I/H/E. The exhuast isn't load but I might be missing the pinging. I wish someone could help me out. Oh and it's about half way inbetween the TDC mark and the middle 16 BTC mark and it's all the way advanced.

if the arrows are pointing up on the timing gears. theres small cuts on both. now if you look in between both gears there should be plastic on the head and youll see a small mark... align the to cuts on the gears with the mark on the plastic..
just because the arrows are pointing up. doesnt mean the teeth aligned.......
good luck..

Are you talking about a DOHC cause I have a SOHC. The cam gear is pointing up and the D16Z6 TDC mark is lined up with the plastic mark. Just like it's shown here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=792114
See how the D16Z6 has the TDC mark towards the bottom and that's how I set it. And the crank sprocket was lined up with the oil pump arrow.
Heres another picture too. I did it the way it shows for the si :http://img201.echo.cx/img201/6317/man0033dh.jpg

Yup, #1 is closest to the timing belt. I just don't get why it is reading off. I know I did it right as I read a bunch of how-to's and have a manual with me at all times when I was working on the engine, so I never once just did something without checking it over and double checking I did it right. Thanks for the help though.

Are you jumping the jumper harness when your trying to set the timing? Also is it a rebuilt dist and a manual timing light? Because if so good luck reading it. I always had a bitch of a time with manual lights, so i upped to digital, best 100 bucks ever.
Sounds like your right on with timing, if you dont hear anything you should be good. But to double check again look at the cam. Like DEX said there is 2 markings on the side, Those should line up making a straight line to the back of the cover. Look on the crank pully and you should see the markings, 3 red and 1 white (white is TDC) when you mark that with the line on the crank cover your good.
Sorry if that didnt make much sense its 1am and i had a long day. If it doesnt make sense ill help out more tomrorow

Thanks again luserkid for your help. I pm'ed you back with some more Q's. I have discovered that the mark I went off of (7 o'clock position) say's p28. The one at the top on the plastic cover say's p08 and the head is p08 too. Should I move it to this one?
Turns out my advanced timing light was set to 15 degrees instead of 0 so the whole time it was reading advanced timing. Turned it to 0 and the timing was almost dead on. It's fine now though and I just need some new NGK sparkplug wires and it will run real smooth.
