Default Interesting thread on chassis dynamics

http://fsae.com/groupee/forums...1/p/1
Article concerning chassis dynamics. I know they are not talking about our cars, but how much of that can we apply?

edit to add additional (links see below)

You can only do so much when the chasis of your car isnt going to change, but alot of it sounds useful. Increasing the offset of your rear-wheels in order to avoid hitting cones isnt really relavant unless they're already sticking out past your quarter panels, but I'm sure if you put some time into figureing out where the rollcenter of your car is and then basing f/r ride heights on it sounds like a good idea.

That forum is great. I really have some serious reading to do there since I'll be trying to help get a FSAE program off the ground at my school. It seems like there is so much to consider its next to impossible

We have plenty of control over our suspension setups, enought to make them better and **** them up. We can control springs, damper valving, ARB's, tire/wheel, ride height and a certain amount of geomerty. Things like MMOI "mass movement of interitia" are not really some thing we can change, we cant do a whole lot about the weight split either. But i would be interested to see what the roll stiffness is of an avarage honda with diffrent spring rates and ARB's. I think on a honda we have enought options to control that we should be able to understand all of them.................somewhat.

Is that assuming we know our CG?

i love technical posts on here, but if you dig around in the right places, most of the stuff you want to argue about really has been covered.

Scott (RR98ITR) posted some calculations a while back - make a sandwich and search archived topics.

So you dont actually want to present any useful info, you just want to argue about things that dont apply to a production chassis?

I did present usefull info, it was in the link. I dont want to argue either that was just poor wording. My intent was to start a discussing on on front to rear roll stiffness in concern to CG,RC and any other stuff we might mention. I have been on a big suspension learning adventure lately. I read all these articles on diffrent suspension setups and understand how it works for them, then i come here and ask how we make it work for us.
Anyway i did that search on scots posts and read what he had to say for about 3 or 4 hours, went back to like 2002. So here is what i found, figure i can post links to some of the good stuff to save others from searching for hours.

Theirs a bunch of links that all relate to each other, not is any order but if you havent read them you probably should. Most of you probably know all that stuff but, some one will read it and learn something.

About as fast as you can get when you in iraq waiting to get home to your wife and your car. I guess i could stop reading and just sit here and hope i dont get blown up today. But the reading really does seem to be a better choice.

Reading a bunch of crap on the interweb about suspension dynamics isnt really going to help you much at all, there's too much information and very little practical application of all of this mental masturbation.

There's lots of good books out there -

Thanks RJ i actually spent some time on amazon today also looking at those books. I noticed all the SAE ones cost a TON. I might break down and millikens RCVD book, i am definatly going to order the less expensive ones.
But i dont see what the diffrence is between reading the book or doing alot of reading online, every one is just quoteing those guys anyway. What i am trying to get from the experienced racers is the pratical stuff that you guys know. Thats why i keep trying to start discussions. I also learned a bunch of stuff from scotts posts, i agree with his thinking.
the 1/4 mile quote is just a statement its not a drag car but it does see the strip every so often.
