dude before anyone flames you, get your shield up.....

you can tell obiously if you have a CRX HF or SI model, thats for the not mech peeps,
also HF trannys are longgggggg-geared for that MPG economy. SI Trannys are short geared for more accel.

Im not an expert but do a SEARCH, look for info, read and cheers to knowledge!!!!!11!!!

And what if the tranny has been swapped? or its outta the car with an unknown history? or its not installed to test out the gearing?

I'd agree... you aren't an 'expert'

I know the codes are in a few threads in the archives, you'll have to use the search to find them. I know I found them awhile back to check a couple trannies of mine also. The info was somewhat vague... but helpful still.

How are you supposed to do that with the transmission out of the car?

Tell me how to put my transmission in 1st gear with it sitting on the ground.

I'm quite ignorant....explain exactly how to do it.

No need to be rude about it... its not everyone that will realize the above method requires you to crack the transmission open.

It would take decent tranny knowledge to crack it open, engage the first gear and go from there. IE: tranny disassembly, which and how to engage first gear using either the **** rod or the forks.

Is there no solid method to use to determine type of transmission with it not in the car and without having to crack it open?

Id you read above, all you have to do is put it in first. Just look at witch direction your shift rods go to put the transmission in first.

That above diagram, DOESNT require taking it apart.

That diff that its talking about is what you see when you take the axles out, Its clear to see.

Edit: Edit your response so when people search when they read your stuff they wont get the wrong info.

The method Tyson posted worked for me..

To put the transmission in first,Turn the shift input shaft
to the left and pull it out..

Make a reference mark on the case,
Then clamp a small pair of vice-grips on the input shaft and turn.

I am going to be looking for an Si tranny soon and it will be nice to test it before I spend my money based on some guy's word.

Thanks!

And there is the missing link that avoids cracking tranny open. Now my format/thoughts can be avoided.

find neutral. push the shifter counter clock wise, and pull out. youre in first gear.

then use a vice grip on the end of the input shaft, turn clockwise and count 10 turns.

i really thought these pics were self explanatory.

Ok for the first guy im not a moron ....the car is an HF but the transmission gears were REALLY short feeling. I am putting a ZC in the car and I want to know what kind of transmission it is before I put it back in. I was getting about 38mpg in city and it seemed to be running rough but the gears didn't feel like an HF's should (high rpm's in 5th). I was wondering if theirs any codes...being that I have the transmission bolted up to the motor I don't feel like taking it off again.

what RPM is it turning at 80 mph in 5th? its very simple. high RPM's above 3K rpms its not an HF trans.

I must not have it in first gear, because my reference point ends up nowhere near any of the indicated marks!

yah doing 80mph Im pretty sure the RPM's were above 3k I think they were near that around 60......Its been a cpl weeks since Ive driven it so I can't remember exactly. But with the HF motor and the mystery tranny im sure it was 3k+ at 80mph...does the motor change the RPM's-gear ratio?
