Shining up the paint?
Hey guys,
I was just wondering what you thought about my options as far as the paint on my car is concerned. It's a 91 so obviously It's old but when its waxed it still shines pretty nicely. I was thinking I was going to take it to a body shop to have them buff out all the little scrathes and see what they could do about some of the oxidation on the car. Is there some sort of method you guys would recommend to get the paint to shine a bit better? I have heard of people wet sanding but that seems a bit extremem to me, I would really appreciate the help guys.

Clay Bar it!
Its basically a kit you buy, includes the "clay bar", which is more like silly putty, a bottle of Quick Detailer or something along those lines, and usually a small bottle of wax.
What you do is work on a area about a foot square, spray the quick detailer pretty liberally, then take the clay bar and drag it across your paint. What happens is that the Quick Detailer acts like lubricant (dont use plain water!) and the clay bar actually lifts up all the grime thats bonded to the paint... You do this untill you feel no more resistance between the paint and clay bar.
after you are done with an area you have to kneed the clay bar to get a fresh surface on it ( the dirt and grime stays imbeded in the clay bar ).
After the entire car is clayed I recommed Waxing the car with Meguiars Tech Wax
Then a second coat of Meguiars 100% pure Caracanuba wax for protection.
After this your paint will feel as smooth as glass, like new paint...I was definitly impressed.
While waxing a little trick is the use like .5" blue painters tape and mask off like the windows and door handles- basically all the little crevices where its a pain in the *** to get the excess wax out
Granted your clearcoat isnt totally destroyed you'll be extremely happy with the results.

wow bro thanks a ton, that was really good info, I'll have to set aside a day for all of that lol.
When you say I have to knead the clay after I rub the car, what do you mean by that? Just rubbing all the dirt out of it? I really appreciate the info man, Thanks for putting in such a thourough response!!

No problem,
By kneeding it like kneeding bread dough,
kinda folding it over, squoosh (sp?) it down, and repeat. Kind of like if you had 2 colors of Playdoh and you wanted to combine the two.
Yea pick a nice cool day out of direct sun. If your in direct sun and its too hot the Quick Detailer will evaporate faster and is just a pain.
Kind of off topic... But i just walked back from my bodyshop and they just got done painting all the jambs and inside of the doors in real House of Kolors Kandy Apple and its just pure SEX!...Once I am able to post pics i will do so asap

I'd say buff it, clay bar isn't gonna get rid of scratches. You say that after waxing it shines real nice, thats because its filling in all the tiny scratches that dull the paint.

If you buff it claybaring is unneccessary. If anything, clay bar before you buff to get all the embedded dirt out of the paint. That dirt will get in your pad and make nice new scratches.
I used a rubbing compound called Farecla ! High speed polished the paint , then I waxed the whole car by hand with World's best wax ! There's not too much info about this Ferecla compound on the net. It's very exclusive stuff + professional.

Here's the wax I use.. its very very expensive stuff ! There's 2 kinds. Mango + watermelon ! ahahaha

yup...wash the car with dawn (regular, blue) clay bar (use dawn/distilled water solution) if the claybar doesn't come with a lubricant. Any quick detailer is too expensive to use as a slip for claybarring. Wash the car to get after the clay bar. Take it to a professional detailer that will buff and polish the paint(have them wash it first) Should run you anywhere from $100-$150 for a good detail.

Take it to your driveway on a nice Sunday...

It's not quite free, but it sounds good. Using the right tools i.e. rotary buffer, random orbit polisher, backing plate for both, pads, waxes, sealants, etc. are definitely not free. Some cars require serious paint "correction" that can only be removed by a professional using those tools. A "driveway" wax job doesn't sound like what his car needs.

A more permanent fix would be to take it a body shop and have it wet sanded and a fresh clearcoat put down. I'm gonna have that done myself, that and some small dents and dings taken out.
lol rob you ***** your car every chance you get :D hahah your car is probably the cleanest ones i've seen
you *****.
as far as the claybar, these guys know what they are talking about. another tip i'd suggest is clean the car obviously, and use the clay bar and detailer, then wipe it down with just plain water. Do sections at a time. and look for microfiber cloth when you remove wax, that **** is the d0pes7. Even though meguiars says the tech wax is the best, I still use gold class on my crx, i think the shine is a lot more deeper and brightens your paint color.

clay bar does smooth out the paint yesss. remove scracthes no. using compound will take care of scratches, then after compounding you polish. Those are both done with a orbital buffer. Then hand wax to protect it, polish will make it shiny but is does not protect. If you have never buffed a car before stay slow with the speeds so you dont heat up the paint too much and watch out for things like black moldings and wat not those will burn extremely easily. and make sure your car is as clean as you can get it becuase anything on the paint will not help you, it will only put more sratches in the paint and dirt in your buffing pad.
