Default Anyone ever turbo a motor that has big cams?

I have a GSR that i initially started to build for all motor, but now I really want to go turbo. I've already got a built head including some stage 2 camshafts, and I don't really feel like taking em out (especially since i have really good torque throughout my rpm's).

I've never seen a car with beefy cams and a turbo/supercharger, and was wondering if it would be bad? I can't think of any reason, since it doesn't change the compression much, but it does require me to pump more fuel (bigger pump and fpr) from the cams alone.

So if i did turbo it, would I just need to really turn up the fuel and bigger injectors, even on only like 5 lbs?

*note - i searched, and i am not a newb. i just ask cuz i've never seen it done before.

I believe there are people running turbo ls setups with crower? 404's. I think that these cams are large NA cams.

heres how I see it.

Turbo
idealy, for best results, zero overlap. There is no reason for overlap with FI, i will explain in the next sentence.

All motor
Having overlap benefit the "breething" of the engine. It creates a vacume or something. This is ideal conditions for a n/a build. Why, motors are big pumps that pump air and crap basically. Imagine if you hooked a big azz vacume to your exhaust, thats a crazy idea, but its the same idea, sorta.

I just dont buy that. People make such amazing power with ITR cams and big turbo setups and they have a fair amount of overlap. Not to mention they are really large cams to start with.

I've run Crower 404 (similar specs, i have a dohc zc) and they performed *very* well. Now i run JG 1001s which i also really like.

Big cams + turbo + honda = <3

Boostfed doesn't buy it either.

Using the higher lift will probably give you more gains than the negative effects of overlap. You'd be surprised what lift does for you...

Interesting...I never looked at it this way, but it does make sense. I had always followed the general rule that cams made for NA should not be used for turbo. I probably should have held on to my S1S1 cams instead of selling them and buying OEM GSR cams.

oh well...live and learn I guess.

boosted low rpm engines....... no/little overlap
boosted high rpm engines....... wildest cams possible kick ***.
use cam sprockets but they arent going to make the most powerb with NO overlap.
no overlap does increase spool up.

hmm i guess i'll give it a green light then. i have custom made crower cams, that are pretty beefy. fully built head too, so i rev to about 9500.. i figure i'm gonna look for a big turbo, since i do have 9500 rpm's to try to spools the thing, and i only want a couple pounds.

i can see having a lil *** turbo not being able to spool enough to keep my motor at positive boost/vacuum lol at 8 grand

I think having some knowledge of what you're talking about would help you answer questions better.

Don't you love it when people pass on misconceptions that they heard on here that are wrong? IE, VTEC is bad for turbo, LS trannies rock for turbo, etc.

There you go. Stick with ITR's.

There are cams available for turbo setups bigger than ITRs that work well. I would recommend a cam that is made for turbo. Check out comp cams.
