Integra ECU guru's help needed: differences between obdII p72 ecus
Ok I know 96-99 is obdIIa and 00-01 is obdIIb with the immob.
here is my situation and my question:
I have a 1997 Integra RS with complete 1999 gsr setup.
The ecu that came with the 1999 gsr swap will throw a code when directly plugged into my Integra, but when I plug in a 1995 (obdI) p72 via a conversion harness it runs without any codes.
now in doing some research I read there is also a difference in the 96-99 obdII ecus (p72); the 98/99 p72's throw codes in the 96/97 gsr's cause they look for some kind of fuel tank pressure sensor which the 96/97 gsr's didn't come with, while the 96/97 p72's do not look for that sensor.
I would like to run my RS with gsr directly off a obdII p72 without throwing soft codes for inspection purposes, so I'm looking to pick up a 96/97 p72, since the 95 p72 cannot be used for inspection which now is a plug in affair in my state
.
Is this a good idea, or will I be the owner of three virgin p72 ecus( 95, 96/97,99) with nothing to show for it?
I spent a lot of time searching this, even bringing back a thread from the dead,
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1229061
so any fresh help would be greatly appreciated from people who are 100 percent on their knowledge, thanks

ok, so I took a calculated risk for the few things I read by looking at the different ecu's people were selling
who knew the classifieds forum could be a tech forum
so after buying one more p72 ecu, this is what I wound up with:

looking at these pics:
the one on the top, 37820-p72-A01, is the obd1 p72 ecu that I was running via a conversion harness without tripping any codes, but it also wasn't legal for the NYS obd2 inspection test.
the one on the bottom, 37820-p72-A04, is a 98/99 gsr obd2a ecu, that plugs directly in, but would trip a soft code...also not good for NYS inspection
couldn't figure out why it was tripping this code, till I saw in someones fs thread that the 98/99 obd2 gsr ecu looks for some kind of fuel tank pressure sensor that 96/97 gsr's didn't have, so when installing them on a 96/97 teg, it would set off a code.
I tried to confirm this information unsuccessfully, so I took a chance and bought the ecu in the middle, 37820-p72-A02 which is a 1996 obd2 p72 ecu in order to see if this information was correct.
well after a few days and a few hundred miles of testing, I can say it is true, and the 96 gsr ecu has not set off any codes
so i no longer have to run a obd1 p72 via a conversion harness, and I should be able to pass the NYS inspection (obd2) with no problems.

my 98gsr is obd2a, point of me saying these two top lines, no immobilizer on my car with either ecu installed.
I am running a conversion harness to my p28 obd1 ecu.
you can find obd2b ecu's with immobilizer disabled, just gotta look. Can you pull the code, so we can check it or at least post the code with the explanation of what it is trying to say?!?!

The information I found on adam's fs thread was coorect, and I have not had a code since with the 96/97 p72.
98-01 tegs have the fuel tank pressure sensor, that the 96-97 don't....so that's why 98-99 p72 ecus set off that soft code when installed in 96-97 tegs, and don't in 98-99 tegs.
the immobilizer has nothing to do with this paticular problem.
