Broken Golden Eagle Cam Gear
While driving up 101 on the way home from work on a Friday afternoon, I heard a small pop and my engine died. Tried to turn the engine over while coasting and it produced a nasty grinding sound. So I pulled it over and got it towed to the shop.
Here is what broke.
This was the cam gear for the exhaust side, so all 8 exhaust valves got bent.
Also..... the intake cam gear looked like it was alright, but after inspecting it more, I found 2 hairline cracks (hard to see in pics, definitely visible in person) on it as well, so this would have given out eventually too.
Look center right.
Look above the eagle's head.
I was running a JG port and polished head with a JG valve train that was pretty stiff and Buddly Club spec III + cams. My mechanic believes that the valve train was too stiff for street use and caused too much stress on the cam gears. But I don't know if that would cause the cam gear to break the way it did.
Has any one else had problem with GE cam gears? Is it the design of the cam gear, having just 2 structural points?
Thanks!

Yeah, that sucks man--I feel for you . Nobody ever mentions these, but you should look in to the Jun cam gears, I run one on my single-cam, they are all steel with what looks like a factory outer gear (modified) they are a little more money, but worth it in my opinion. Also, that GE gear is totally carved out--good for weight but as we can see probably not enough material for good durability.

IMO, looks like a bad design. Too much weight reduction and I’m willing to bet that was made from lower grade aluminum like 6061. Also look at the size of the bolts compared to the size of the material around the mounting locations. The bolt size looks way to big for the material area sporting it. Added stress over time and this is what you end up with.

Send in those gears a.s.a.p. and we will replace them absolutely free of cost. We discontinued those gears, but I have never seen anything like that. Our new gear was designed MUCH stronger.
Here is a pic of the new gear:
Please give us a call right away (909) 592 - 4311 ext. 104 and ask for Robert. He is expecting your call.

Back from the dead, but does anyone from G.E. know if there any problems with these B series cam gears...they are still new and will be used w/skunk stage 2 cams in a b18c1, just wanna be sure since these are a different design than the previous two posted, but they dont look to suffer from the excessive weight reduction like the first set...thanks
